President's Message
The End Polio Now Ute Rally is on track to be with us on Saturday, November 14th in Tanunda and will be passed to the Barossa District Club for Sunday to be used in Nuriootpa. Prizes will be drawn in Adelaide on December 19th.
We had a photoshoot at the Rowland Flat Airfield on Wednesday, preparing for an article in the Leader next week. A Pitt Special stunt plane was on site for the photos and we were treated to an aerobatic display as a teaser for the airshow.
We will need a commitment from members to be available on the 10th, 11th and 12th April to assist in the setup, running the day and the cleanup afterwards.
Several organisations have indicated a willingness to support the airshow so we will not have to do all the work ourselves, but we will all need our members and Friends on the ground to assist with the management of the show.
While on the subject of the Airshow, we need suggestions for projects that we can support with the funds generated. A suggestion already received is to replace a vehicle that is used to support Cancer sufferers in the Barossa Valley.
The current easing of restrictions over COVID-19 is heartening giving us hope that the airshow will go ahead, the only other showstopper that is out of our control is the weather, we need Blue Sky, White Fluffy Clouds, and a gentle breeze from the west.
Some exciting proposals for activities, fellowship and visits were tabled at the Board meeting on Thursday. The restrictions on the pandemic have been hard on all of us so we will welcome some fresh events to get us all back to enjoying Rotary and serving our community.

Rotarian Jim Miller
I've just had a chat with Jim. He seems pretty happy and the Jim we've all known for many years. He told me that his room is small but adequate and that there are plenty of regular activities that he can join in. Don Farley prints out a copy of the bulletin each week and delivers it to him. Jim has moved from his independent unit into a single care room 45, Protea Wing in Lutheran Homes. Jim would welcome a phone call or visit from any of his friends in the Rotary club. His direct line is 8565-9445. Editor.

Group Study Exchange (that was)
Switzerland 2002
Editor’s Note: One of the past, but very popular programs funded by the International Rotary Foundation was Group Study Exchange. The GSE program paired Rotary Districts to send and receive study teams. The district committee would initiate and implement programs in which teams comprised of outstanding men and women were chosen to go overseas, in order to advance international understanding and goodwill through the study and discussion of the geography, its people and culture of the respective countries to which they were exchanging. During my time as District Governor (then in Clare Club), I remember the opportunistic times of taking part with the committee in firstly interviewing Rotarians for Team Leader and then interviewing applicants and assisting with the final selection. In 2002 we were able to send and receive two teams, one to New Zealand (wine industry) and one to Switzerland. Many of you know that the selected Team Leader for Switzerland was our own John Little.
John joined the selection committee and the following people were chosen to join him for the study team to Switzerland.
A little history on John’s chosen team.
- Mark McGill -born in Queensland moved to South Australia at age 24 to pursue a role in Sports Administration. Very devoted towards his then young son. Later years held a position with the Adelaide Crows in promotions and fundraising.
- Josephine Lamshed – a very bright young lady then 28 years old. Had a passion for travel and learning about other cultures which developed into a career with the department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. Lived in Vietnam for a year as an Australian Volunteer Abroad. Holds an honours degree in history.
- Katherine Newland (Kath) – Born in the Barossa and grew up on a dairy farm at Moculta. Likely well known to many of our members. Had worked in the wine industry for 11 years where she developed her managerial and public relations skills. Enjoyed cooking, good food and wine.
- Saideh Kent - Born in Sydney. Moved to South Australia to work in the agricultural regions as a Land-care officer. Loved working alongside farmers on sustainable agriculture and environment projects. Had a passion for flora and fauna and loved exploring the Flinders Ranges.
- Ben Mumford – Born in Adelaide. Worked as a Civil Engineer on road infrastructure projects. Changed careers to become a constructor of ecologically sustainable housing which had been his long-term interest and passion. Musician, played guitar and managed a 12 piece funk band.
GSE was later replaced by VTT (Vocational Training Teams)
