Presidents Message
Last Monday we had a District 9500 Zoom meeting, mainly to keep the clubs and District Board informed about what the cubs are doing during the COVID-19 period.
Most clubs are using Zoom to keep members informed. Kidman Park holds club meetings on Zoom and inducted a new member at their last meeting. Several clubs include a guest speaker at their virtual meetings. David Egan said people can join in with the Adelaide Club Zoom meetings and provided a link. Details are on the Rotary Club of Adelaide web site.
A question about security on Zoom was asked and Graham Fussen said the problem was people “crashing “ into meetings by putting random codes into the Zoom link and hoping to get in, thereby getting access to people in the meeting. The security on Zoom has been increased by the use of passwords built into the link so that any gate crashers have to get the meeting code and the password to get in. Our meetings are password protected. An extra method is to use a “waiting room” so that anyone wanting to join a meeting must be admitted by the meeting host. The IT experts consider the current Zoom software to be safe.
Several suggestions were made about maintaining income to the clubs operating fund. Some clubs get their members to donate some of the equivalents of what they would have spent at a club meeting to the club account, and do it once a month. If you count up the Sergeant Bear coins, the sergeant’s fines and the meal levy, most people would contribute $5 to $7 a week at meetings making $20-$30 a month. Donating $10-$15 a month to the Club account would make sure we have funds to keep the club operating. When the Board discussed this, Treasurer John said we did not need to do it yet, but maybe if the Social Distancing continues we may have to find some way of keeping the club finances at a safe level.
News from the District Conference Committee, they are going to have a Virtual Conference this year so that we can get the essential business done. I am not sure of exactly what they will be doing, I can’t imagine we would be having a three-day Zoom meeting with 700 participants, but the details will be made available soon.
DG Jane said that at the last District Board meeting Lisa Dallow logged in from her hospital bed. She still has a long way to go, but everybody was pleased to see and hear her and wished her a speedy recovery. Good news indeed. ( Lisa was injured and her husband Gavin and daughter were killed in the White Island Volcano eruption in NZ)
This Social Distancing and Isolation is getting a bit boring, the only outings we get is to go to the shops. I am beginning to understand why the dogs get so excited when a car goes past.

Visitors are welcome with the following restrictions; max of two persons at a time, visiting hours 12noon – 1 pm and 7 pm – 8 pm, call hospital before visiting (85632398) and enquire if it is ok to visit Jim, and of course, go through the COVID 19 requirements at the front entrance before going into hospital.
I visited today, Jim looks pretty good, didn’t stay long as he was having lunch, and I think he enjoyed seeing someone.
I think Bryce will visit Jim tomorrow.
