October- Community Economic Development
Paulo V.C.Costa from Brazil was RI President 1990-91. His vision for Rotary was 'to bring about a better world'. He challenged all Rotarians to "Honor Rotary with Faith and Enthusiasm". "It is imperative that Rotary keep pace in a world that is changing with such velocity. The great challenge we face is to grow not just in quantity, but in quality. We need men and women with a calling to serve - to use their hands, minds, and hearts to make this a better, happier, more just world. We need people of goodwill, of faith, of enthusiasm".
Quote from The Rotarian January 1991
President James' Jottings
A big thank you to Julie Weckert for sharing her experience with us on Haemochromatosis. To share one’s health ups and downs requires a lot of bravery in my opinion. To Keith Millington an additional thank you for your sharing. I was amazed how common amongst Australians it was and how relatively straightforward management is for something that was once a terrible burden. Awareness of health and taking steps to improve it makes a huge difference to our lives.
Australia Rotary Health Hat Day helps raise vital funds for research into 0–12-year-olds mental health. Thanks to everyone for wearing a hat along to our meeting. It was good fun and very interesting to hear the stories of origin. We raised some important funds for an important cause. Thank you everybody.

Thank-you Julie for your presentation on Haemochromatosis.
Here was a very interesting subject that probably many of us had never thought about. It usually develops from an inherited disorder and is one of the most common disorders in Australia today. Normally our bodies absorb only the amount of iron from our food that we need. People with haemochromatosis may absorb too much iron. This excess is stored in our body and overtime this can lead to iron overload.
The most common symptoms noticed are chronic fatigue and even joint pain leading to osteoarthritis. Julie made it quite clear, “If you don’t fill well, it is time to visit your doctor for a medical check- up.” Haemochromatosis
Inherited Iron Overload Disorder is potentially fatal but easily treated. All symptoms can also be caused by other medical conditions but can be diagnosed by having a simple blood test.
Hats Galore, or as Keith Millington called it, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party... And there were Rotarians under all of them who listened to
Julie's presentation.
ARH - Lift the Lid on Mental Health
On Sunday 12/10/2025 we attended the Regal Theatre and saw the film "TheTravellers", starring Bryan Brown along with several others. 90 people were there from various clubs. All proceeds benefit Australian Rotary Health. DG Rajeev drew about a dozen raffle prizes which raised a good lot of funds for ARH.
Walk for DV
On Saturday Bill and Sandie attended the walk with many from other Rotary clubs. Here is the link for the footage shown by Channel 7 on Saturday night's news:

News from Bev Stephenson ...
Bill and Sandie called in to Gawler Hospital on Wednesday 8th to visit Bev, and to give her the get-well card from her Rotary Family, which Bev appreciated.
Bev was looking and feeling much better than the few days before, and has been able to get up and mobile, which is testimony to her strength and determination. The next stage of recuperation involves relocation and rehab, and as there is no definite date yet for when she will move, if you want to visit Bev please call the Gawler Hospital on 8521 2000 before going there.
Your Club Needs YOU - and maybe your partners, family and friends!
We are very short of volunteers to help out with cooking and serving breakfast at the Nuriootpa Futures Association SA Rural Women's Gathering on Sunday 19th October at Barossa Bushgardens. We need to be set up by 8.30am to start cooking so that the majority of the 250 egg and bacon rolls are ready for participants from 9.15am, and everyone is served by 10.00am.
If you have not already put your name down, please text Sandie on 0417 833 691 with your name and the names of anyone you are bringing to help out. The more people helping, the easier it will be for everyone!
Great prizes, Great chances!
The raffle to raise funds towards a "vehicle of independence" for Michael Cook, in recognition of his contributions to Rotary and community, has been carried over to the next meeting, Monday 20th October. So if you have already bought tickets, remember to bring them with you to be in the draw!
And if you haven't bought any yet, or would like to buy more, please bring $5 for every three tickets you wish to buy. And thanks for your support.

JUST A THOUGHT
If I'd known how much fun grand children would be, I'd have had them first.
