Invocation:
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary Friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.
Quote of the Month
We need to proclaim to every Rotarian that Rotary is what Rotary does. And without his or her involvement, it is nothing.
Royce Abbey, 78th President of Rotary International (1988-89)in an address to the 1988 Convention.

Rotary Theme for the Month of November

                       PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Don’t forget the District 9510 AGM to be held on November 14th at The Comfort Inn, Regal Park Motel 44 Barton Tce East, North Adelaide at 10 am.
If you did not get the email and want to attend, ( Zoom option offered) I will pass on the registration details to you.

The End Polio Now Ute will be in Tanunda on 14th November with a trailer carrying an Iron Lung. This will be a good chance to see an iron lung and ponder the terror of a child that needed to be in it. The ute and trailer will be near the Barossa Valley Tourist Information Centre.

We have had a letter from Senator Andrew McLachlan CSC congratulating Rotary on 100 years of service in 2021. A few errors did not detract from the sincerity of the recognition of Rotary International.

I received a Certificate of Appreciation from PDG Jane Owens which recognises our membership of District 9500 in its final year.

I had a good break in the Flinders, we got rained on in Jamestown, crossed floodways, dodged fallen trees and washed out roads between Orroroo and Hawker to find the road had been closed at Hawker (but not at Orroroo). We had 3 glorious days at Rawnsley Station, then a night in Quorn to see the Silo Light Show, a night in Wirrabara and then came home as my dog Tiffany was having problems. It turned out Tiffany has a “good” cancer (if there is such a thing) that can be treated with drugs.

Guest Speaker
Our meeting on Nov 5th  was all about the Aged Rights Advocacy Service (ARAS) and well qualified Carolanne Barkla presented a power point description on all the matters that are included in this service. ARAS is funded by the Department of Health, National Aged Care Advocacy Program and Office for Ageing Well, SA Health. ARAS is the South Australian member of the Commonwealth funded Older Person Advocacy Network (OPAN). The presentation included Key Services, Advocates and their role, Human Rights, which covered 1.dignity and self determination 2. Liberty and security of the person 3. Equality and non-discrimination and 4. Standards of living and care.  The service now includes many benefits and rights. Following on from the Royal Commission into Aged Care and facilities, major changes have been implemented in all States of Australia. We are all getting older and we can now be assured that care for the aged has been vastly improved. Keith Adams, chair for the evening, thanked Carolanne and presented her with the usual Rotary gift.

Carolanne Barkla's CV is well worth reading.

Carolanne is a proud non- born ‘Barossan’ having lived in the Barossa, at Penrice, initially from the late 1980s when she worked as the Clinical Nurse/Director of Nursing of Tanunda Lutheran Homes. She left the Barossa in 1993 when her partner left the air force to join Qantas and her son was six weeks old.
Carolanne returned to the Barossa in 2008, after joining Heuzenroders Lawyers practising predominantly in the Wills, Estate, Aged Care, Advance Care Directives and Powers of Attorney areas of Law. Carolanne also served on the Board of Barossa Village for five years.

She brings to the role over 20 years’ experience as a registered nurse, lawyer, executive, spanning health, aged care, legal, not-for-profit peak body, policy, sector development and social justice. She also has lived experience as a military family member and supporter of veterans.
Carolanne has been recognised for her academic excellence for Elder Law, Comparative Aspects of Malaysian Law, and legal research into Compulsory Reporting in Aged Care. Carolanne has embraced opportunities to serve on state and national advisory committees collaborating with the purpose of improving the quality of life and care of older people. During the last ten years, Carolanne has also served on a number of not-for-profit Boards.

Rotarian Ian Rice together with wife Bev have given many years of service to Rotary and other local organisations. Ian retired as bulletin editor 18 months ago after more than nine years in that role. They still live in the family home at Dutton, surrounded by farming land and their well managed garden of Eremophilas. Ian, approaching 84 years, has indicated that it is becoming more difficult to come to Rotary meetings now and has indicated his wish for a change in membership. Peggy and I recently spent a delightful afternoon at their home and the strawberry sponge was delicious. Good people and great to catch up. Visit them if you are able.....Editor.

                      Scholarship Awards
Our Rotary Club's school scholarship awards were recently presented to the successful students.  Prue Maitland presented Nalieka Hassold from Faith School with $750 and Don Farley presented joint winners Ashley Sonntag and Ella Rothe from NHS to share their $750.

Barossa Valley Rotary Foundation News.
PDG Allan Wilson rang to advise that RI had approved the application for a Matching Grant for our University Scholarship Program. We are eligible to receive $4500 towards our $9000 commitment to this year's program. As we have not had a recipient from Flinders University this year our total cost will be less, however we will be able to recoup half of our scholarship payments for this Rotary year. Given our lack of opportunities to be involved in fund raising activities due to the Covid 19 environment this is very welcome news.

John Semmler, Foundation Secretary/Trustee

Rotary Polio Ute will be in Tanunda next Saturday November 14th. Please make sure to return all raffle tickets to Secretary Sandie as soon as possible.

Don Farley has advised that Rotarian Jim Miller is not well and cannot have visitors for the next few days. You are able to contact Jim on 8565 9445.

A special Birthday for Rotarian Lisa Akeroyd on her way to 100 years.

There is a touch of Rotarian Peter Sich in the above description.

Editor's Note: 50 friends gathered at the Clubhouse to celebrate Rotarian Lisa's 50th birthday. It was also Melbourne Cup Day and Loving Lisa was one of the starters in the Clubhouse Cup. I will not mention where she finished in the running (ha! ha!) except to say Peggy and I, along with all the others enjoyed a wonderful, happy day and the cake was delicious.
