Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote for the month
Paul Percy Harris the founder of Rotary made some forthright comments on War and Peace.

It is easier to interest men in war than in peace; it therefore requires more moral courage to talk peace than war.
'The Rotarian February 1917.'

Must the best genius of men be devoted to the science of war and none to the science of averting it.

'The Rotarian February 1940.'

War is a ghastly blunder; even the winners lose.

'My Road to Rotary.'

I have no hesitation in saying that world peace could be achieved and made permanent if reared on Rotary's firm foundation of friendliness, tolerance, and usefulness.

'Addressing the 1940 Rotary Convention, Havana Cuba.'

Will the world's leaders ever learn!!!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE
CAR PARKING - YALUMBA WINERY
We have agreed to supply personnel services to assist with parking of vehicles on the following dates- 6th May, 7th May and 8th May.

Yalumba Winery at Angaston are hosting the Barossa Valley version of "Tasting Australia". Four(4) sessions over the 3 days, 2 on Saturday 7th May. Require say 20 volunteers over the 3 days.

Should be nothing arduous, just making sure that cars are parked efficiently in Yalumba Winery car park. Would expect that each shift would take about 1 hour.

Rotary stands to make about $500.00 from this event.

President Bill's Burble
                                              Meeting 3272

President Bill opened meeting  with a welcome to all Rotarians, Friends and Guests.

President Bill reminded everyone to refer suggestions for guest speakers to Keith Adams so he can provide a choice of dates for the potential guests, and thanked those who have put up their hands to assist with catering for Sunday’s lunch at the end of the District Conference.

On Monday 28th a few Rotarians had a very enjoyable time cooking and serving a sausage sizzle to the students attending the Nuriootpa High School Leadership program, purely as a community service. President Bill thanked those who helped, and mentioned that it was a very rewarding experience. It was especially pleasing to hear from one of the facilitators that our club was being used as an example to students about community service and social responsibility.
President Bill recommends that all club members take up any opportunities to get involved in youth activities, eg RYDA, because it’s great to have that interaction with and feedback from the young(er!) ones. On Monday every single student who was served thanked us, and a couple even offered to help clean up afterwards. Mind you, that could’ve been an excuse to miss the next session! Cards promoting the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and the Rotary Sailing Challenge were given to one of the facilitators to share with students, so we might get results from that.
The Emergency Medical Information Booklets are available now for a $2 donation. Several were sold at the Barossa Jobs Fair on Tuesday, and sixty have been allocated to the organisers of the Friday night Lyndoch Dancing group, so hopefully they’ll all sell as well.
President Bill thanked everyone who assisted with catering at the Barossa Jobs Fair on Tuesday, saying that we were very well received with quite a few people asking about Rotary and donating to our club, and two attendees from Salisbury and Adelaide Rotary clubs who approached us just to say hello. The organisers also appreciated our feedback about how they could improve promotion of any future such events within the Barossa Valley. We’ve been promised a “generous donation” from the Department of Education, Skills and Employment and will let you know what that amount is, hopefully at the next meeting.
STOP PRESS: we’ve been informed today (4 April) that the donation will be $700, which will be put towards our New Generations projects, as the donation is from Department of Education Skills and Employment.

We received a very nice thank you email from Kerry Davies, who is the grandmother and carer for Jimmy Strugnell, a young man who is in a very difficult family situation and requiring tutoring through the SPELD organisation to improve his reading, spelling and grammar. Our Board, chose to support Jimmy and his grandmother Kerry with a donation of $325 to cover tutoring for Jimmy and training for Kerry.
If you don’t know what SPELD is about, it’s a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1969, which provides advice and services to children and adults with specific learning difficulties and those who care for, teach and work with them.
President Bill advised that we have secured two prominent Barossan women to deliver jointly the Sir Condor Laucke Oration, Rebecca Tolhurst, the Chair of the Barossa Co-Op Board, and Cathy Main who is the newly appointed CEO. The Oration will be held at the Vine Inn on Thursday 12th May, and you will receive information about booking your seats over the next few weeks.
Maundy Thursday Breakfast is a long standing tradition for our Club, and is scheduled for 6.30am on Thursday 14th April at Kroemers Crossing. The breakfast itself is fairly simple, but we need hands on deck to help otherwise it just won’t happen. Food needs to be ordered and collected, the catering trailer needs to be towed from the shed, we need cooks and serving people. President Bill asked the meeting for volunteers to ensure this event can go ahead, and thanked Peter Sich and others for putting their hands up. Peter will need numbers by the end of the meeting on 7th April, to enable food to be ordered.
An invitation to the Rotary District 9510 Foundation lunch on Sunday 15th May has been received and will be forwarded to all members. After the lunch the winners of the Rotary Polio raffle will be drawn.
In President Bill’s absence, Past President Keith Millington will facilitate the meeting to be held on 7th April.
President Bill invited PP Sue Graetz to deliver the Four Way Test, and afterwards thanked Sue for her fine work!
He thanked our guest speaker Kym Farley for updating us about the Backpacks for Kids project, and thanked everyone for attending.
Before closing the meeting, President Bill reminded everyone that the results of the vote for our club meeting venue will be communicated as soon as possible after the meeting. He cautioned that the outcome will not please everyone, but it will be a fair majority vote so he asked that we accept the decision in good Rotary spirit.

Back Packs 4 SA Kids.
Guest Speaker Kym Farley
Back Packs 4 SA Kids was started by Rachael Zaltron 10 years ago and will celebrate that milestone in October.
The packs are given out mainly to children who go into emergency foster care generally through domestic violence situations.
There are 3 packages that they hand out.  The basic backpack, a home starter pack for families who are having to start over again and the Anchor packs for people aged between 12-25 who are experiencing homelessness.  This year they are looking at handing out around 6500 backpacks and 500 each of the Home Starter and Anchor packs.
Aside from this they have also been able to help with 170 packs for Afghan children who arrived in Adelaide and will be giving out 30 packs to Ukranian children who are arriving this week

The face of this little child says it all

Making a Difference. Taken from the Back Packs  website.

In 2015-16, almost 162,200 Australian children received child protection services, 61,700 were on a care and protection order and 55,600 were in out-of-home care.  Approximately 44,000 other children become homeless every year, often leaving in a hurry with their mums due to family violence.

This year we will be supplying 6,500 Backpacks, 600 Anchor Packs and 350 Home Starter Packs. Number of children we have supported to date: 71,887.

Endless variety of Back Packs that are put together and       delivered to children in need.

What all these children have in common is that they leave home with no or little notice and often have no clothing or other essential items beyond what they are standing up in. All these children need our help and support. We can’t help them all, but at Backpacks 4 SA Kids, we constantly strive to help as many as we can.

                         Rotarian Don Farley Achievement
Don Farley has recently been awarded recognition by the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) for 65 years of SACA membership. He has received his baggy red cap to prove it. There are very few who can boast of this honour!

I am not sure, but I think that Don is probably the only member of the Rotary Club to see Sir Donald Bradman bat, but I'm sure that he saw the great Keith Miller play.

Submitted by Peter Perkins.

                                             Well done Don.

Editor - due to the volume of information the next bulletin 3273 will be sent out
on or about Good Friday the 15th April 2022.
