World understanding and peace. Service must be the
first step to peace, peace grows within the heart. Peace thrives
with service and understanding, according to dignity for all of us
. Peace is nourished by truth and principles, and it is strengthened when we over-come our differences to work together, finding common ground for a noble cause.
From The Rotarian February 1992.
President James' Jottings
An interesting and important week for our Rotary Club - the RYDA program saves lives. Thanks to all those who were able to get along to help run this crucial program. The students were exposed to many important lessons about being the driver and passenger of a vehicle that will hopefully save lives. By testament of other fellow Rotarians, in the nearly 20 years this program has been run, there has been a huge decrease in road death and accident amongst local youth.
Again, on the theme of youth this week, we had our wonderful university scholarship recipients come and speak to us. Wow! What an incredible bunch of young members of our community! To see service as a strong part of a person's ethos at such a young age gives me hope and makes me very proud to call this community home.
Uni Scholarship Recipients
The members and friends of the Rotary Club of the Barossa Valley
congratulate our 2025 recipients.
Rotarian John, followed by students Meg Couzner, Lachlan Elton-Martin and Olivia Lofay with President James.
Meg is studying for a Bachelor of Para Medicine at Flinders University; Lachlan is studying for a Bachelor of Laws at University of SA; Olivia is studying for a Bachelor of Laws at University of Adelaide, and added 'I am 18 years old and have lived in Williamstown for most of my life. I am a passionate musician, animal lover and a big advocate of women's issues.'
Since 2011 The Rotary Club of Barossa Valley Foundation has made available three scholarships each year to students from the Barossa Valley/Eden Valley areas to assist them to undertake tertiary studies at a South Australian university. We entered into an agreement with each of the South Australian universities through their ‘Donor Sponsorship Programs’.
The scholarships are available to Barossa Valley/Eden Valley students who have demonstrated academic merit.
Payments are made over the first two-year period of the course. The scholarships provide $2,000 in the first year and $2,000 in the second year subject to satisfactory progress.
By awarding three scholarships each year we have been able to assist 40 young people in their university studies. The Foundation hopes to continue to provide the scholarships to benefit the youth of our community for many years.
The members of the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley are very enthusiastic about this project and are committed to the support of it. It is seen as a much-needed extension of the work already being done for our youth through the support given to our two high schools, the ‘Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program’, ‘Operation Flinders’, ‘Youth Exchange’, ‘National Science Schools’, ‘Rotary Youth Leadership Awards’ and ‘Rotary Youth Enrichment Programs’.

The Four Way Test
Robert R. Barth was Rotary's first international president
from Switzerland in 1993-94. During his leadership he commented on the 4-way test saying that it was little more than a bit of Rotary legend, one more
item of throw-away information. However, he went on to say, "My friends, please don't disregard this simple slice of wisdom. The Test remains a highly valuable ethical yardstick, still applicable in today's often confusing world. Using the test as a guideline, we can all be better persons, better citizens, better business and professional people, and better Rotarians."
From 'Just between us' THE ROTARIAN October 1993.

The Travellers is a poignant, funny and heartwarming family story from acclaimed filmmaker Bruce Beresford.
Stephen Seary, a charismatic and successful stage designer, returns to his small hometown in Australia to say goodbye to his dying mother. What was to be a quick trip descends into chaos, drama, and at times downright funny moments as Stephen navigates family responsibilities, a difficult relationship with his father, old friends & past lovers, all while trying to return to Europe for a major opera contract.
Written and directed by Bruce Beresford
Starring Luke Bracey, Bryan Brown and Susie Porter with Shubshri Kandiah, Celia Massingham and Nicholas Hammond.
