NYSF talk

(L to R: Vanessa Seppelt (proud mum), Speaker Oscar Seppelt with Rotarian Pru Maitland and President Keith Millington)

Last night's meeting saw Oscar Seppelt return to the club to update Rotarians on the Nation Youth Science Forum.
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science. Programs show a wide variety of engaging, rewarding and inspiring study and career options available in science, technology and engineering fields.  More than 12,000 young Australians have progressed through the NYSF Program.  Rotary is the Founding Partner of NYSF and today the 21 local Rotary districts across Australia continue to conduct selections for the NYSF each year.

Oscar started his presentation with heartfelt thanks to the club and commented the club's contribution was 'more than plenty.'

This year the forum was held in beautiful Brisbane in January.  Oscar began by giving members a typical day which started, much to his dismay, at 6.45!  The day consisted of team building activities and STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) visits to various destinations.  As Oscar is an inspiring marine biologist, his visit to SeaWorld on the Gold Coast was a highlight and only served to harden his resolve to embrace this as a career choice.  He was fascinated by the sea jelly project where sea jellies are evolving to hoard algae under their tentacles for food instead of being predatory.

He also visited the Griffith Ecology Centre where he met 'Suzy' a rather large and hungry-looking python and the mangroves at the Gold Coast.  He commented he appreciated the 'hands on' aspect of the forum rather then just being talked at, although he added those talks they did hear were excellent.  Oscar said he loved seeing the science and 'how they work it out' and detailed a visit to a worm farmer and how the science from the worm farm had progressed to aid in a cure for some cancer patients!  He told Rotarians "this opened my eyes to outside what is taught at school especially in ecology - it's not all about environment."

His vision now?  Next year will bring many opportunities, including working as a student staff leader in next year's program.  Oscar wants to study marine biology at James Cook University and I have no doubt he will not only get there but excel at whatever he puts his mind to.

Well done, Oscar, you did our club proud!

           HELP FOR KANGAROO ISLAND

Last Saturday saw Rotary supporting the BBBFM 89.1 Community Radio's fundraiser "Help for Habitat".  Funds were raised to assist rehabilitation of native animals' habitat on Kangaroo Island.  The total raised for the day through the sausage sizzle and trash and treasure stalls was over $650.  Well done to all!
                                            -----
Last Saturday also saw Rotarians Hans Han, Lisa Akeroyd, Nick Anderson (Friend - but probably not for very much longer!) Roxane and Peter Canning involved in hosting a luncheon to raise much needed funds for the beekeepers on Kangaroo Island.  A total of $2,000 was raised.  Another well done!

Welcome back Patrick Ritchie-Haydn!
                             Thanks Max!

A grateful club thanked Max Rasmussen for all his hard work doing clothing bin retrieval over the years.  Max has hung up his key in favour of a well deserved rest.
