Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the month

Rotary is not something written on paper. It is engraved upon the hearts of men and women. Rotary service enriches our lives. We are the leaders. People look up to us to take the initiative. We are the guardians of dignity, decency, restraint, humanity. In recent years we have seen massive changes in society. Old industries and traditional occupations no longer exist. In some areas, workplace changes have decimated entire local economies. Through Vocational Service, Rotarians can bring hope and stability and help with re-training, discussion groups and an awareness of community needs.

PRESIDENT BILL's Burbles

President Bill welcomed everyone to meeting number 3276 with the good news that the Rotary Chocolate Wheel is back in action!

He was very pleased, as were others involved, that the Sir Condor Laucke Oration last Thursday 12th May was a great success.

Peter Perkins, President Bill and Secretary Sandie attended the Rotary Foundation lunch on Sunday 15th May. The Rotary Polio Ute raffle winners were drawn and the first prize, organised by our club, was won by a member of the Coromandel Valley Rotary club. Bob Cooper, who has been organising the Rotary Polio Ute relay for the last few years is standing down from that role, and it doesn’t appear likely that the event will continue.

The attendees heard very interesting presentations by PDG Greg Marlow (who drove down from Tennant Creek!) about the Arch Klumph Society Trustees Circle, and PDG Dennis Shore (from Victoria) who spoke about Endowments and Major Gifts.

Several of our club members attended the last meeting of the Kapunda Rotary Club on Monday 16th May. District Governor Jeff and Jenny Neale, Area Governor Craig and Kiki Dowling also attended. What could have been a rather sad night was actually a celebration of all the achievements of that club, and it was good to hear each of the remaining seven members talk about their involvement with Rotary and the Kapunda community. Again there was a great write up by Tony Robinson in The Leader.

President Bill expressed condolences on behalf of club members to Geoff and Lesley Schrapel and his family on the loss of Geoff’s mother.

President Bill reminded members about the Angaston and District Lions Club annual hand over dinner on Sunday 19th June which he and Sandie will be attending.

Members also have received invitations to the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the Rotary Club of Waikerie on Wednesday next week, 25th May, RSVP to Sandie.

Our District Changeover will be held on Sunday 3rd July, the day after our club changeover, and President Bill understands that it will be at Moonta. More information will follow.

The Sir Condor Lauke Oration

The interview style format with Sue Graetz interviewing Rebecca Tolhurst, Chair of the Co-op Board, was very well received and was well suited to the smaller attendance. Thanks to Tony Robinson, our Honorary Member, there was a great write up in The Leader.
The interview covered a wide range of topics that explained the in-depth workings of the Co-op. We were left with the belief that the Co-op was in safe hands and will prosper under the current management.
In closing the Oration Present Bill mentioned that the Service Clubs of the Barossa Valley have shared hosting the Oration since its inception in 1981 when Sir Condor Laucke was the first Orator; and that there have been only six years when the Oration has not been held. He suggested that this is a testament to the value that the Barossa Valley service clubs place on this special event, and stated that we must strive to continue honouring Sir Condor Laucke with the Oration. Unfortunately, only three clubs are involved now in organising the Oration - us, Kiwanis and Lions Barossa Valley – which means our turn will come around again in 2025.
--------------------------------------
Induction of James Dunn

After dinner, President Bill called on Sue Graetz and James Dunn to come forward for James’ induction. Following Sue’s introduction, James was inducted to membership of the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley, with the usual warm Rotary welcome.
After being presented with his folder and badge, James gave a very interesting and entertaining story about his life’s journey and association with Rotary through his family.

----------------------------------
District Changeover

Our District Changeover will be held on Sunday 3rd July, the day after our club changeover, and President Bill understands that it will be at Moonta. More information will follow.
------------------------------------
One Minutes.

Mark Graetze requested all members search through their laundry piles for missing Rotary Aprons. We are down a lot after the last Anzac Day Breakfast.

Keith Millington reported the 2023 Airshow Committee is in operation and that there is still an opportunity for members to be involved. We need someone to assist in Promotions and there are also some support roles in other areas.

John Semler reported the University of SA recipient of the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley Foundation Scholarship will be Anika Marston of Angaston, a Nuri High student. She is studying Bachelor of Psychology Cognitive Neuroscience and is hoping for a career in helping people.

Closing Comments

Following Marie’s delivery of the Four Way Test, President Bill advised that on the 16th June, he and Sandie will be attending the Area Presidents meeting with AG Craig at Loxton, so PP Keith Millington will fill in. PP Keith also will fill in at the next club meeting on Thursday, June 2nd, as President Bill and Sandie will be on a houseboat. (President Bill has promised PP Keith his assistance will be rewarded and his “cheque is in the mail”!)
This means the next official meeting attended by President Bill will be our changeover on Saturday 2nd July!
President Bill then closed meeting number 3276.
