Bulletin 3266

The Vine Inn

  Thursday December 16th 2021

Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the month

"Goodwill is like a melody that moves from person to person - a whistled tune that finds its way from vale to vale over mountains and hills and far away."

"When a tree stops growing - it is ready to die...A Rotary club is like that. It is moving ahead only when it is growing. When the growing ends, the knife and fork club begins."

Quotes taken from "Little Lessons in Rotary" the author was RI President Charles Tennett 1957-58 from North Carolina U.S.A. 'Little Lessons in Rotary' was used by millions of Rotarians as a kind of ideological guidebook.

President Bill's Burble

16th December 2021 : Christmas dinner

President Bill welcomed Rotarians, Friends and Guests to this special meeting number 3266, our 2021 Christmas dinner.
Patrick Ritchie-Haydn was wished a happy birthday for 27th December, and President Bill suggested that Patrick will be wishing his birthday present comes early at the Adelaide Oval!
Some happenings since our last meeting were mentioned, including that our club logo has been put on the new Barossa Area Fundraisers For Cancer butterfly cars, as thanks for our donation from the proceeds of the 2021 Barossa Airshow. President Bill and Peter Perkins, Community Team Director and PE, attended the Zonta Club Christmas drinks on Wednesday 8th December, and used the opportunity to network with quite a few community group representatives. At the Strategic Planning meeting on Thursday 9th December the Board finalised our Club Strategic Plan, discussing a number of issues that need to be addressed. More information about the plan will be shared in the new year.
President Bill listed events to put in your diaries for early 2022, the first being our Soiree on Thursday 6th January, at Bethany Reserve. Then we start our test drives of alternative venues with our meetings at the Tanunda Hotel on Thursday 20th January and Thursday 3rd February, followed by meetings on Thursday 17th February and Thursday 3rd March at the Wanera Wine Bar in Angaston.
The Barossa Council has very kindly allowed us to display the Rotary End Polio Now Relay Ute in a prime spot at the Australia Day Breakfast at the Tanunda Show Hall. We’re sharing this event with Barossa District Rotary Club, selling raffle tickets, the remainder of which will be distributed amongst our members to sell.
After Patrick delivered a personalised recitation of the Rotary Four Way Test, President Bill wished everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and an enjoyable remainder of the evening in fellowship.
He then closed meeting number 3266, our last for 2021.

CHRISTMAS DINNER
Thank you to Roxane and her helpers for organising the club Christmas Dinner function at the Vine Inn last night. An excellent two course meal was efficiently delivered to the fifty two present by the hard working staff.  Several prizes were handed out to the lucky raffle winners and Ian Mader took home the Roxane special Christmas dressed Gnome cake which has a guaranteed eating life into the New year. Overall, the combined sale of the chocolate stars and raffle tickets raised a total of $665 for Legacy, the chosen beneficiary. Well done to all those present.

Serving a special Christmas Lunch at the   Kampung Kitchen with the support   of Rotarians Gavin Sidhu & Peter Thomas.

Kampung Kitchen's FLO Christmas Lunch Thursday,
                        2nd December 2021.
Kampung Kitchen (39 Murray St, Tanunda), assisted by Rotary Barossa Valley, hosted a Christmas
Lunch for students of Nuriootpa High School's FLO (Flexible Learning Options) program on the 2nd of December.

Kampung Kitchen's Owner and Head Chef, Yahaya Ismail, in search of a way to give back to the community, had in weeks prior, approached Rotary Barossa Valley to help find a group of underprivileged children he could provide a Christmas Lunch for. Rotary Barossa Valley liaised with teachers of Nuriootpa High School's FLO network to find 12 worthy recipients.

FLO, or 'Flexible Learning Options', is a school enrollment program that assists disengaged youth
return and finish their education pathways, enabling them to either gain meaningful employment or
gain entry into the tertiary education system. Students in the program have dropped out of the
mainstream education system for a variety of reasons including bullying, mental health, family
difficulties and pregnancy.

The Christmas Lunch was provided to 12 students (plus 2 teachers) who successfully completed the 2021 school year. On the day itself, Rotarians Peter Thomas and Gavin Sidhu assisted Yahaya with the transformation of the restaurant into a Christmas themed wonderland, helped serve, provided prizes through the Rotary Wheel and cleaned up after the event. Speaking to the students provided a great insight into the potential being unlocked by the FLO program, these students were excited to learn and motivated to graduate. They were also so thankful
for being provided with a Christmas lunch.
Thanks go out to Josh & Ash of Beans & Cream for providing 5 great tasting gelatos, Chris & Rachel of Ability Chocolates for providing the Rotary Wheel prizes, teachers Doreen Salt & Donna McKeller for accommodating the students, Peta from the Leader, and of course Yahaya Ismail for volunteering his time, food and restaurant to provide these students with a memorable Christmas.
