Thursday July 1st 2021

Invocation:
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the Month
Rotary is a great, dynamic force. It has touched the lives of the destitute and disabled. It has meant food for the starving, precious pure water for the thirsty, a healthy future for infants, solace for the lonely, a brighter, happier world for the young, and a meaningful existence for those in the twilight of life.
Taken from The Rotarian, July 1986. The year
of 'Rotary Brings Hope'

Official Changeover of Presidents
MC Sue Graetz opened the meeting right on 6.30 pm and then followed the formal welcome, Invocation, Loyal Toast and other matters relative to this evening's function.
PDG Peter Thomas delivered a dynamic toast to Rotary International, highlighting how fortunate we are to be living in Australia and having to tackle the Covid 19 Virus compared with many countries in Europe and our close-to-home neighbours living in PNG. India is a strong nation of Rotarians, yet sadly the virus has had a huge impact on their people, with many deaths. PDG David Egan responded to this important toast. After this toast MC Sue invited President Mark Graetz to address the gathering.
Mark advised that he had electronically forwarded a copy of his annual report to all members and friends of Rotary.
He then highlighted several achievements during his time as President, in particular the club's hard working committee, which had accepted the challenge of hosting the Barossa Airshow. Its success on April 11th this year had enabled the club to distribute some of the profit to a number of local service organisations and charities, as well as securing our financial capacity to host again in two years time.
Seventy-three people came together at the Wanera Wine Bar in Angaston to celebrate the Induction of our incoming President Bill Simons. Bill was inducted by outgoing President Mark, who read the presidential charge and handed over the heavy collar of past named presidents who had served the club over 65 years. Bill's induction was received with acclamation. The recognition of Gavin Sidhu becoming a Paul Harris Fellow was a highlight of the evening. Gavin's determination to help the people of Uganda by obtaining a Global Grant upwards of US$70,000 through The Rotary International Foundation, brought about this recognition. PDG David Egan presented Gavin with his certificate and PHF pin.  Gavin received support and guidance from PDG Peter Thomas in obtaining this Global Grant.

President Bill Simons takes over!
Meeting 3254

And said “It is my great pleasure to declare OPEN this meeting 3254 of the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley, my first as Club president.

Who would have ever thought after being a Rotarian for
only 3 years and 4 months, that I would be
standing in front of you tonight, with the honour of being president of this wonderful club. I look forward to sharing the next twelve months with you and achieving great things."

Bill then said, "Take a look at the new Rotary International theme banner here on the podium, highlighting the theme ‘Serve to Change Lives’. Let’s do what we can to live up to this theme."
He encouraged everyone to get a copy of this week’s Leader and read the great article  promoting our club, our changeover dinner and our activities during the past twelve months.

Looking forward President Bill said, "There are two main objectives I would like to see for our club over the next twelve months.

1. Collaboration with other service clubs and community groups in projects and shared goals. As mentioned on Saturday night, we all have great ambitions and by pooling our resources we can achieve so much more together than separately.
As Aristotle said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

 2. Growth in strength and viability, in the participation levels of all members, whilst not losing sight of the need to attract more members.

To elaborate on the second objective, I will use the analogy of the
Yellow Recycling bin.

You put items still with some value into this bin, then later they are taken out elsewhere and re-purposed or re-cycled and made into another item with value. We might think we are out of date and have no further use, but along comes an opportunity to resurrect old skills and perhaps even re-invent ourselves, and before we know it, we’re contributing value again.

A great example of how our Club was able to do this, probably without even realising we were doing it, is the 2021 Barossa Airshow . (Bill, my tired old legs told me that night, I’d been doing something since 7.30 am - editor).

When you read the Club’s revised Constitution, before approving it at our AGM on 10th December 2020, you will have read Article 6 Five Avenues of Service, and I’m sure you remember – and I quote – “Item 1 Club Service, the first Avenue of Service, involves action a member should take within this club to help it function successfully.”  Without new members coming along, it is essential that each of us is prepared to re-cycle ourselves, resurrect those old skills, perhaps adopt new skills, and take on roles within the club – something we might have done before, or something we haven’t done before. To keep going and growing and being useful to each other, we must take up the challenge of re-cycling ourselves where needed.

Keep in mind we still need a President Elect for this year. On that note - Our District Governor Jeff Neale (from Campbelltown Club) and his wife Jenny will be our special guests at our meeting on Thursday August 19th.

I’d like to see the club take on the Zonta Birthing Kits project and with this in mind, we intend to apply for a District Grant to assist with funding for it
.
In rounding up my first week as your President, I’ll leave you with this thought – chances are, being involved in business at some level , you know about Five Year Plans. In order to survive, every business needs this. Our Club is no different, and certainly it is the expectation of Rotary at all levels that we would be planning this far ahead. So, while it is Board responsibility to write and align activities to a Five year Plan, we would like input from every Club member to help us write the best Five year Plan possible, one which we would be proud to submit to our District Governor.
And I must add – it won’t all be about work! We must also ensure we enjoy lots of fellowship whenever we can.
Thank you everyone for listening
    Your President Bill."

Rotary Information – Peter Perkins
Rotary Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS)
Today there are 40 million people enslaved. This is four times more than the number taken out of Africa during 400 years of the Atlantic Slave Trade (Slaves in Southern states of USA/American Civil War.) Modern slaves are disposable, cheap and hidden from plain sight.

Young children are in great danger from sex traffickers who exploit opportunities from natural disasters, civil conflict and mass migration.
RAGAS has developed several projects:

  • Bakhita House opened in June 2015 to accommodate young women and girls rescued from slavery in UK

  • Set up schools in 3rd world countries to educate young people

  • Trafficking shelters e.g. in Kathmandu help with aftermath of April 2015 earthquakes

  • Anti-trafficking projects provide vocational training for young women and girls.

RAGAS recently supported a Rotaract panel discussion on modern slavery and is also involved in the Global Peace Conferences. Human trafficking is one of seven areas of focus for peace and is included in the Rotary Peace Scholarships funded through The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
