     Apologies for the confusion

Hello Rotarians. First of all I must take full responsability for the confusion about me doing the Bulletin.  I never meant to step away from it permanently, just until the meetings resume, and that was only because I didn't have any material to put in each edition - or did but it had gone to my junk folder and I wasn't aware of it!) I was finding it difficult to find the time to chase up material to 'invent' a bulletin.  On a rereading of my email I can see I was less than clear.

On a happier note - we have material for this week's Bulletin. My thanks to those who contributed.  If there are no submissions each week I won't publish but if I have something sent to me I am happy to put out a Bulletin.

Your contrite editor,

Roxane

        Presidents Message

Problems with holding a Changeover meeting have come to a head. After discussions with President-Elect Lisa and the Board, we have decided that the Changeover will be deferred for 3 months and I will stay on as President until we hold the changeover. Lisa’s business in Property Rentals has gone wild due to COVID-19, legislation on giving relief to renters and the government frequently changing the rules so she has little time available to work on Rotary business. Our next Zoom Board meeting will decide when Team Leaders will change duties.

Talking of Zoom, the RI Membership Development Team is holding a webinar Connect With the (Online) Rotary World on Tuesday, 28 April, 15:00-15:45 Chicago time (UTC-5) That’s about 5:30 am 29th April. The subject is about using online facilities, such as Zoom, Skype, or other systems to enable clubs to hold meetings and connect with members. Anyone interested in joining in, please let me know and I will send you the details.

Isolation can be a stressful time for some people. Being cut off from family and friends can make life difficult and relying on phone calls just does not seem enough. Using programs like Zoom or Skype does enable families to have ‘face to face’ interaction and can be a reasonable substitute. If anyone needs to know how to set up a family Zoom or Skype meeting, call me and I can talk you through it.

Staying home at Easter is important. If we drop the virus controls of Social Distancing during the Easter break, we risk undoing all the gains we have made in the last 2 months. Just 1 person with the virus, but not aware they have it, could cause infections to hundreds of people over the 4 days of Easter, and the sad part of it is that none of the infected people would be aware they are infected and could be spreading the disease even further. Stay home, keep your distance and stay safe.

                            A Story with a Moral

A school Teacher asked her year 5 class to tell a story with a Moral to it. Little Johnny got up and told this story.

My Auntie Karen was a Fighter Pilot and was on a mission over enemy territory when she was shot down.  She bailed out of her burning jet and while she was floating down she saw an enemy patrol heading towards her landing site. Auntie Karen checked her pistol and her knife then realised she had a hip flask of whisky, so she drank the whiskey then tossed the empty flask away.

As Auntie Karen hit the ground, she drew her pistol and was ready for the enemy patrol. She shot several of them and when the bullets ran out, she stabbed more with the knife until it broke and then strangled the last one with her bare hands. She then walked back to her base and was saved.

The teacher said, “That was very brave of your Aunty Karen, but what was the moral to your story?”  Johnny replied, “Stay away from Auntie Karen if she has been drinking”

The Rotary     Never Stops Beating
Please write the words LOVE & HOPE on each heart that you make

Hi Rotarians and Friends

I had a light bulb moment the other day - After a little time of thinking I decided to set my self a challenge, and that is, I would make a heart every day from 1st April 2020 to the day when we will meet again at the Club house for our first meeting

If that time is from 1st April to say 30th September I will need to have made 183 hearts – breaking that down to 1 a day doesn’t seem so daunting!!!!

This is what self-isolation does to the mind!! However I think this is going to be a bit of fun and certainly stretch my crafting ability which teeters on zilch

I have attached a copy of my first heart and am planning it to be the only one using the computer

You will notice that I have included two words on the heart - LOVE & HOPE  that makes the heart very special

Now I would like to invite all Rotarians and Friends – husbands, wives, partners, children, grand-children, relies, friends, to make  just one heart, or you can make as many as you like

I just ask that you please include the two words LOVE & HOPE on every heart you make

Layla my 9yo Grand-daughter made 2 hearts and sent me a photo, they are very special. Art class while being home schooled should come in handy

This is not a competition and you only need to keep your works of art safe at home and bring them along to our next meeting

If you would like to chat about this bit of silliness please give me a call (0477 111 322 please note my new phone number)

Sending my HEART OF LOVE & HOPE to you

Stay safe and well

Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is truly one of the most successful programmes that Rotary has initiated. ARH commenced to raise funds funds for a sole project- research funds to find a cure for SIDS. As we know, ARH is a financial powerhouse and has become one of Australia's largest non government fund raiser for medical research as well as such activities as granting university scholarships to Indigenous medical students and rural/regional based student nurses. Now a ARH programme that perhaps has not received wide publicity is

Funding Partner Programme.
The Funding Partners Programme (FPP) was initiated in 2004 to allow Rotary clubs and Districts the opportunity to participate in an area of health research of their choice by funding PhD research scholarships. ARM makes a financial contribution  as well as administers the scholarship. The FPP is available to all Rotarians, individual Rotary Clubs, multi-club partnerships, Rotary districts and corporations within Australia. Since the FPP commenced, ARH has administered over 250 PhD scholarships in various health areas.
Key features of FPP:
  • FPP scholarships are advertised internally at universities, research institutes, research centres (hospitals) and directed to nominated researchers known to have an expertise or interest in the field
  • Clubs may direct funding within the Club's state
  • Clubs may direct funding within any area of health
  • FPP scholarships are made available to research community twice a year- July and December
  • FPP scholarships are competitively assessed by 3 experts within the Club's chosen health area
  • ARH will send the Club a personal biography and photograph of selected scholar
  • FPP scholarships can be over several years, maximum 3.5 years
  • scholars must provide annual progress reports for review for continued funding, Clubs receive copy of reports
  • scholars are required to attend Club functions and speak about their their PhD scholarship
  • funds paid to ARH are tax deductible and paid at commencement of the programme or a anniversary if the programme if multi-year
  • FPP are valued at $30,000 p.a. for up to 3 years, annual contributions are split Rotary Club/donor $19,000, University/Research Institute $11,000

    Coronavirus Bulletin Board

The Club meetings provided lots of Fellowship, allowing everybody to catch up with what everybody else had been doing. In an attempt to keep some of that fellowship going, I ask members to submit information, anecdotes, gossip or jokes so that we can use the Bulletin to keep in touch with each other.

I guess we're some of the lucky ones, Peter and myself.  We have jobs.  We are used to working from home so don't really feel any different until the weekends.  Peter is really busy so life is going on same old-same old for him.  He misses going to his gym class I think and definitely misses the Friday session at the Angaston Pub with his mates.

Mason has come back from Queensland as he was working as an Uber driver and of course is now unemployed.  He's just finished his mandatory isolation and we have no icecream left!  I'm happy to have him home and safe. Breen is in mandatory isolation as he is with the Air Force on stand-by for deployment to assist in COVID-19 related issues if called upon.  If one single member of the platoon gets sick, they are all grounded so it's a measure of making sure they are ready to go when needed.

What has changed for me is that with the arrival of COVID-19 everything has gone online. For those who don't know, I caption for deaf university students.  They go into a live lecture and by the magic of technolgy (Go to Meeting, Zoom) I can sit in the Barossa and hear the lecture.  I write it and because I have shared my screen with the student, they see my captions as subtitles, live, as it is happening.  Now every university in the country is conducting lectures and tutorials online. Since a deaf student can't hear that, simply everything needs a transcript.

My government job as a Court Reporter has also changed.  Since all jury trials have been suspended we are also using technology to have virtual courts, mostly in the civil jurisdiction or for small criminal matters.  Some judge alone trials are continuing and boy, are the Sheriff's Officers enforcing social distancing!  Since we are about to find ourselves with even less work due to Easter and building renovations reaching the 'noisy stage' we are being asked to redeploy.  I've said I would be happy to do so and it's a case of watch-this-space for where I might end up!

The biggest change to our lives is how much we miss our friends.  We are a fairly social couple and not seeing people we love face-to-face has been the hardest.  We meet a couple of times a week with our friends via WhatsApp video or Zoom (The Angaston Isolaters) and these meetings keep me sane.  I really look forward to them and wait, wine in hand, not so patiently, for each session to begin.
