Back to the Future … Put these events in your diary now!
For our next meeting, please do not turn up to the Vine Inn at 6.00pm on Monday 1st April!
Come along instead to our Maundy Thursday Breakfast at 7a.m. on Thursday 28th March. There will be a delicious breakfast and an Easter message from Rev Steven de Kleer, finishing up with hot cross buns and maybe even Easter eggs! Unfortunately, Bill and I can’t be there due to an appointment in Adelaide, so Past President Sue will chair the meeting. Thanks to everyone involved in giving our club members, partners and friends a lovely start to the day.
Barossa Kiwanis have invited us to a fellowship meeting with them on Thursday 11th April, and their guest speaker that night will be Bill O’Brien, Mayor of Light Regional Council.
I’ll email details separately and will need your confirmation of attendance by Sunday 7th April.
DG Talkback on Sunday 14th April is available to all Rotary club members – you can find the link to Zoom in on the District 9510 website. These get togethers are a great way to find out what other clubs are doing, as well as what’s happening throughout the District from DG Craig.
At our meeting on Monday 15th April, we will hear from club member Mike Connors about his very interesting work in the medical instrumentation field, and from our fourth NYSF 2024 attendee Joshua Burrows about his NYSF experience, so make sure you get along to that special two-for-one offer!
It’ll be all hands-on deck for the RSL Tanunda ANZAC Day Breakfast on Thursday 25th April; please register with Mark Graetz if you haven’t already done so.
You’ll have received two invitations recently:
- The Rotary Club of Gawler 70th Anniversary celebrations will be held on Saturday 27th April, and you’ll need to book and pay for that separately, per instructions on the invitation.
- The Sir Condor Laucke Oration hosted by the Lions Club of Barossa Valley will be on Thursday 16th May; Cardiologist Associate Professor Carmine De Pasquale BMBS (Hons), PhD, FRACCP, FCSANZ, FAACC, FESS (phew!) will be the Orator.
And of course, we have plenty more in store during May and June, so keep up with coming events via the Bulletin - you don’t want to miss out!

Our Guest Speaker at Meeting 3322 was the very dedicated and passionate Louise Kelly, Deputy CEO & Head of National Services and Development at Offenders Aid and Rehabilitation Services Community Transitions (OARS CT).
Louise delivered a very informative and interesting talk about the services provided by OARS CT in the Domestic and Family Violence sphere, and the success of educational programs such as “Don’t Become That Man”, which are contributing to lowering the recidivism rate in South Australia.
It was particularly uplifting to hear about the SAPOL initiatives in this area. Louise explained she had come from a meeting with Gawler and Barossa Police, and they wanted us to know that they have signed off on a different way of managing call outs to domestic violence situations. Where they are unable for whatever reasons to instigate prosecution proceedings, they will take an intervention and prevention approach, including providing resources and encouraging the seeking of help for all concerned, i.e. the apparent perpetrator and the apparent victims.
This fits in with Rotary’s intentions of awareness and education within the Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence program.
It is pleasing that a six-week program hosted by The Barossa Anglicans and Knowing You Matter is being offered to the Barossa Community, and our column in The Leader edition of 27 March, will have information about that program.
Thanks to everyone for welcoming Louise to our meeting, and for the thoughtful and interesting questions and observations.
Sandie, Louise (guest speaker), Robert, Beverley, Phil.
Together we say NO to Domestic and No to Family Violence.
Thanks to Anne Schilling and Karin Bosomworth for volunteering to represent us on a Driver Reviver shift on Good Friday.
Also to those who will be keeping an eye on the Angaston clothing bin while Patrick Haydn is unable to take his turn.
We had reasonable representation at the District 9510 District Conference in Loxton, with seven members plus one partner attending. The standard of keynote speakers was amazing – I think they’ve been getting better every year! – and the Loxton Club did a great job with the events and activities. Attendance exceeded 370 delegates representing the 87 clubs in District 9510, with four delegates from District 3000 in India, who were visiting District 9510 clubs participating in Fellowship Exchange.
We had plenty of interest in our Ring Pulls collection, so I expect we’ll receive more enquiries soon.
That was the last District 9510 Conference as such. In 2025 Districts 9510 and 9800 (Melbourne through Echuca area) will combine for a Multi District Impact Summit, to be held at Morphettville Race Course from Friday April 11 through Sunday 13, 2025.
I hope we will have record club representation at the Summit!
Tanunda Show -March 9th 2024
A big thank you to the eighteen members from the Barossa Valley Rotary Club
who braved the heat to manage the gates at the Tanunda Show. There was a big
decision about cancelling all the animal exhibits but the 40-degree heat would have been far too high for the welfare of the animals, so the Tanunda Show
committee had no option open to them. The restricted attractions and the heat
meant the numbers were down on previous years. The day for the gate people
was quiet with lots of water consumed. We were pleased when the Tanunda Show committee called it a day and gave us an early minute. The beer from
the Rehn Bier stand was very welcome.
Rotarian Jessie Harman's comment on Facebook was no doubt well received
by the workers.
She said, "Now that's dedication. Well done all."

District Conference in LOXTON.
15th -17th March 2024
RI Presidents Rep. Jennie Herring from NZ. with Kiki and Craig.
The District Conference was great with members from more than 50 clubs represented. Conferences always give you time to catch up with friends you haven't seen for quite a while. As Jennie Herring said in the Event Program booklet, "Since joining Rotary in 1997 I have attended 14 International Conventions - this is where you see the true internationality of Rotary and make friends and acquaintances from all over the world." The theme of this conference Inspire Hope & Celebrate followed the RI President's theme of 'Create Hope in the world'. All of the speakers had good stories to tell and listen to, with several highlighting Rotary programs and the values of being a Rotarian.
Michael Crossland was perhaps the standout, capturing his audience when he told us how he defied the odds of surviving a rare form of life -threatening cancer. Needless to say, his book was for sale and the queue resembled something similar to the line-up at the gate of a football match. There was no shortage of enjoyable food whether it was lunch, morning tea or a packed-out Gala Dinner. Congratulations to DG Craig and his very busy committee. Peggy and I are glad we went to Loxton. It was well worth the drive. (Editor)
