Bulletin 3265

The Clubhouse Tanunda

  Thursday December 2nd 2021

Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the month

"Goodwill is like a melody that moves from person to person - a whistled tune that finds its way from vale to vale over mountains and hills and far away."

"When a tree stops growing - it is ready to die...A Rotary club is like that. It is moving ahead only when it is growing. When the growing ends, the knife and fork club begins."

Quotes taken from "Little Lessons in Rotary" the author was RI President Charles Tennett 1957-58 from North Carolina U.S.A. 'Little Lessons in Rotary' was used by millions of Rotarians as a kind of ideological guidebook.

President Bill's Burble

Opening remarks:

            Welcome to meeting 3265

What has happened since the last meeting?

  • Sadly Catherine Lawler has resigned from our Club.
  • Gavin has stepped down from the President Elect 2021-2022 position, which means we’re on the hunt for a President 2022-2023!
  • Our club now has a Public Relations team, Keith Millington, Sandie Simons and Peter Perkins. They’ll be working on replacement of old signage etc.
  • We’re still looking for people to help organise the Sir Condor Laucke Oration in May 2022 – form the usual orderly queue!
  • Another one for our newly formed Public Relations team:  We have registered our club’s can ring pulls fund-raising for the District Conference Showcase “Can Ring Pulls ; other clubs have indicated interest in participating in the collection of ring pulls for us to collect. (Could we grow this into a District project?)
  • We have registered our club’s 2021 Barossa Airshow for the District Conference Soapbox; our newly formed Public Relations team and the Barossa Airshow maintenance team will work on that.
  • Speaking of the Airshow, we have nominated it for the Council Event of the Year Award; these Awards are usually presented at the Australia Day Breakfast.
  • If you haven’t already registered for the District Conference, you’ve missed out on the early bird discount! Great to hear that a few of our club have registered. You can still register and it’s in our back yard, so no excuses about the cost of travel and accommodation!
  • Donations in Kind working bee with lunch prepared by the G-Train was on Saturday 27th November; Sandie and Bill helped out; this could be a good “day out” for our club to get an appreciation of what goes on in that big shed.
  •  Several members earned money for our club by managing car parking at the music event last Saturday afternoon at Peter Lehman Winery, thanks to Mark for organising and to all who helped.

What’s coming up?
  • Barossa Enterprises new “Activity Centre” is opening tomorrow and Peter Perkins has teams to help with two sausage sizzles and car parking; thanks Peter and all who are helping.
  • President Bill has been invited to Christmas drinks with the Zonta Club on Wednesday 8th December.
  • Board will be meeting again on Thursday 9th December to finalise our Club’s strategic plan.
  • Our club Christmas dinner is on Thursday 16th December at the Vine Inn, and you must tell Roxane whether you will be attending and who you will be bringing with you. Information in previous Bulletin.
  • Our first meeting for 2022, on Thursday 6th January, will be our usual Soiree theme, this time at Bethany Reserve. You need to tell Roxane if you are attending, or not. Information in previous Bulletin.
  • Here’s a Big One: the Rotary End Polio Now Ute Relay will be in the Barossa area from Tuesday 25th January through Tuesday 1st February; we’ll be sharing with the Barossa Districts Club, and possibly Kapunda. We’ll be looking at opportunities to share a promotional event with the Districts Club, so if you have any ideas for an event, please talk to one of our Public Relations team. Raffle books have been released but we won’t distribute to our members until after the Ute’s been here and we’ve sold tickets to the public. The “Fly the Barossa” package we put together is first prize again!

Closing remarks:
  • Thanks everyone for coming along to the meeting tonight, special thanks to AG Craig and Dennis Ludgate for coming all the way from Loxton tonight.
  • Declare meeting number 3265 CLOSED!

                                Annual General Meeting

Rotarian Grant Schuyler conducted a short meeting and advised the club that nominations for vacant positions have been received as follows:

President Elect 2022-2023  -   Peter Perkins

                  Secretary -              Sandie Simons

                   Treasurer -             Mark Graetz

As there were no further nominations the above named positions were declared with acclamation.

It will be the second time for Peter as he also served as President of the club in 2004-2005. His secretary then was Mark Graetz. Club meetings were held at the Barossa Motor Lodge in Tanunda.
It was also the year that Rotary celebrated its 100 year anniversary, which began in Chicago in 1905. In 2004-2005 the District Governor was Rotarian Katina Jones and the District Conference was held in Alice Springs. Several from our club attended.

Our Guest Speakers all the way from Loxton
Rotarians Craig Dowling and Dennis Ludgate from the Loxton Club presented us with their knowledge and experience in building a successful Interact Club.
Craig began by saying ‘What is Interact all about? And why would you want to start an Interact Club?' Dennis then gave us information on how to form an Interact Club and covered the need, process and obligations involved.
Interact is a program of Rotary international. It was created in1962 for young people aged 12 to 18, and new clubs must be sponsored by Rotary.
If our Rotary Club decides to sponsor an Interact Club it needs to obtain approval of the school, confirm that there is sufficient enthusiasm to start a club, establish that there are at least 15 interested candidates. It will then be necessary to meet with potential Interactors to discuss how the club will operate.
The club will then elect office-bearers, complete Interact Club Certification Form and submit to the District Youth Committee. Following approval from District and RI the DG signs a charter and the club organises presentation of charter and induction of members.
Once an Interact Club is formed a Rotarian is required to attend every meeting. Interactors will be invited to join in the Rotary Club’s activities where appropriate, ensuring that there is full co-operation with school policies. Following the building of a positive relationship with the club members and the school, Interactors are then encouraged to learn about other Rotary Youth programs. It is necessary to foster the development of school and community leaders as well as providing exposure to new cultures by promoting international understanding. Most importantly Interact creates the opportunity for fun and new friendships.
Naturally there are costs involved and it is recommended that a Rotary Club provide a minimum of $500 Seed Capital. Other considerations include promotion material, badges of office and member badges and consideration for an Induction Event for the new club.
There are now eight established Interact Clubs in District 9510 and Loxton has experienced a number of benefits from their Interact club. These include two over age (18 years) Interactors becoming Rotarians, a charter member parent  and one of the school staff have become Rotarians. Other benefits include publicity through the local media and radio. Furthermore the Loxton club has received excellent responses from local recipients where club Interactors have been working on community projects.
Interact can create real benefits for an aging Rotary Club and maybe it is an area for our club to consider. Throughout the world Interact has become a proven benefit to Rotary clubs as there are now 342,953 young Interactors, in 14911 clubs covering 145 countries.

PP Keith Millington thanked Craig and Dennis for the effort they put into their presentation and handed each of them the usual valuable gift.

Rotary Information presented          by Bryce Lillecrapp
The smiling face below appeared in bulletin 3247 on the                                      1st April 2021

On 26th November Bryce and PDG Peter Thomas loaded the truck with 334 Kilograms of these little aluminium Ring Pulls. At $1.85 per kilo they were able to hand over a cheque for $617. 90 to the club.  Bryce said that it is hard to image that 334 kilos is equal to 1.1 million ring pulls!  The Club has been engaged in this project for many years which dates back to the late Allen Klaebe who was an active member in several areas. Later on Rotarian Craig Rogasch and wife Jan put in a huge effort towards keeping this project going, followed by Barrie Klaebe who has retired from the club. In excess of $20,000 has been raised from this project which has enabled monies to be allocated to worthy causes. It is easy to take the ring pull off cans and hand them to Bryce, Bill or Mark when you have a good number.

                            Obituary - Rod Jury
You may have seen the obituary of the above named in last Saturday’s Advertiser. Rod Jury died on the 14th of October. He was one of South Australia’s pre-eminent physicists. Rod studied  science at the University of Adelaide  where he gained a Bachelor of Science degree with honours. His career covered scientific research, teaching and academic administration. Rod Jury, brother of Rex, was well known to many Rotarians and was a member in his own right. In 1996 Rod established the National Youth Science Forum, assuming the role of director, a position which he held for 21 years. Rod took hundreds of science students overseas in teams representing Australia. In 1997 he was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for his work in science and the Youth Science Forum.  Editor...I am pretty certain that Past DGs would recognise and remember the name Rod Jury along with the many Rotarians who have managed club Youth programs and went about interviewing students to take part in NYSF.  To many people Rod was, to quote the words of Sir Winston Churchill “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma".

Rod Jury from the Advertiser of Saturday Nov. 27th

Editor's note:... If you are a reader of the ‘DG’s Rotary Matters Newsletter’ (out 1/12/21) you will read on page 5 that all of the 51 applicants for the 2022 NYSF will be going to Canberra, whereas the previous two years have been held locally due to COVID restrictions. Perhaps 51 lucky future scientists.

Rotarian John Semmler contacted editor with   the following request. I was happy to oblige.
Bulletin notice please.
In case you were wondering.
The presentation to John Semmler of “100 ways to Improve Your Golf” was greatly appreciated and could go a long way toward solving some underlying problems.
Thanks to John Tunnicliff who apparently no longer needs the book.
Cheers,
JS
