President Bill’s last message as President (in absentia)

Unfortunately I can’t preside over what should have been my last meeting attending as President, because tonight I need to attend the last Area 5 Presidents meeting with Area Governor Craig Dowling (in Loxton). Then tomorrow, Friday morning, Craig and I will be going through what’s in store for me as Area Governor taking over from Craig from 1st July 2022.
Thanks to Past President Keith for filling in at the last meeting and again tonight.
My apologies to Club members who are attending tonight’s meeting in the hope of hearing me deliver in person my final “insightful and inspiring words of wisdom” as President of this great club!
To hear those words (or maybe others!) you will need to attend the Changeover dinner on Saturday 2nd July!

However, in the meantime, some updates:
We’re privileged that attending our Changeover will be District Governor Jeff Neale and Jenny Neale, and Area Governor Craig Dowling and Kiki Dowling. Craig, as you will recall, is District Governor Elect from 1st July.
Several invitations have been received from other Rotary and service clubs to attend their Changeovers, and Secretary Sandie has forwarded these to all members.
PP Mark Graetz and PP Sue Graetz will represent our club at the Lions Club of Barossa Valley handover on 16th June.
Sandie and I will be attending a few:
  • Angaston & District Lions on Sunday 19th June
  • Rotary Club of Waikerie on Wednesday 29th June
  • District Governor Changeover at Moonta on Sunday 3rd July
  • Rotary Club of Gawler on Monday 4th July
  • Barossa Districts Rotary Club on Monday 11th July
And after that, we’ll have a week away with friends at Tumby Bay and Streaky Bay – probably sleeping a lot!
On the subject of our club’s Changeover, we currently have a total of 42, only 31 from our club (including seven partners!), who have confirmed they’ll be there. As we have both DG Jeff and AG Craig attending, we need to have as many members and partners as possible to welcome them and show our appreciation for their attendance.
Please ensure you advise Sandie and pay for your dinner by the RSVP date of 22nd June.

A new Honorary Member
We were all sorry that Craig Rogasch resigned from membership of our club, however we are very happy that Craig has accepted the Board’s offer of Honorary Membership. This offer was made in recognition of his long term contribution to Rotary and our club in particular.
In his acceptance letter, Craig wrote “I am deeply humbled to receive the letter of offer for Honorary membership of the Rotary Club Of Barossa Valley. The Rotary Family was a truly important part of my life and I must admit that over the last years when I was unable to take an active part in the club it has left a void in my life. Whilst my situation has not changed the chance to be able to catch up with Rotarian friends when timing does work out as an Honorary member would be amazing. Therefore I thank the club for its offer and am delighted to accept.”

Farewell to Friends
Vicki and Peter Manning have advised they will not be continuing as Friends of our club, and we thank them for their contributions to our activities during their time as Friends.

Guest Speaker - Carmel Morsi

Rotarian Bryce introduced speaker Carmel Morsi. Carmel is his friendly neighbour who has travelled the world visiting many countries. As our guest speaker she delivered an absorbing talk on the Ukraine backed up with a power point presentation.
Carmel represented Doctors without Borders in the Ukraine as a nurse manager. Clearly, she loved the work and the people of the Ukraine.  The Ukraine borders are mostly surrounded by Russia to the North and East. Its land covers approximately 603,000 square kms of very fertile country. The fertility has been successfully and carefully used for growing sunflowers from which they manufacture sunflower oil. Ukraine is the world’s largest sunflower oil producer which they export. Many of their people live on Borsch which is a thick vegetable soup of sugar beet and vegetables, plus pancakes made from potato are also popular. Potatoes are widely grown and marketed. There are many productive farms and much of the land is divided into five acre lots for family use.  The owners live off the produce and many have a lot of chooks and sell the eggs.  Cattle farms are also plentiful as the fertile soil produces plenty of grasses for feed. There are also large grain farms mainly for wheat growing, much of which goes to market. The most popular bird is the Nightingale and can be heard singing throughout the villages.
Carmel’s presentation was excellent and it wound up with a few questions and a resounding applause.

The following is added with Carmel’s blessing:
However, right now the Ukraine has lost much of its beauty as we all know. The Ukraine held a lot of value in its fertile land and the Russian leaders decided they wanted it back, which was given to the Ukraine in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed. Their leaders decided the only way this could be achieved was through an unnecessary hateful war.  The loss of beautiful buildings including many temples, and the deaths of so many people, including young children, is a needless, selfish act of destruction which has achieved nothing more than a mess of hopelessness.

Nuriootpa Clothing Bin
Rotarians Bryce, John and Peter beginning the clean up

The challenge.

Don't shut the door!

Nearing the finish

Please don't dump on us
Rotary clothing bin to be replaced. The Rotary clothing bin has been refurbished and will be returned to the site at the rear of the Barossa Co-op store, Nuriootpa. The bin had been removed after a series of issues with dumping on the site. Disposing of unwanted goods is costly and uses funds that would otherwise be made available to the charities that Rotary supports. It is provided for clean useful items of clothing and footwear. Damp or dirty items, cushions, pillows, doonas or quilts and plasticware cannot be used in the system and must be disposed of at great expense. Items of value, other than clothing and footwear, should be taken directly to one of the local op shops. The Rotary Clothing Bins throughout the Barossa have been in operation for many years and have provided goods to The Truro Op Shop and The Great Revival Shop in Tanunda to support their charities. The Barossa Valley Rotary Club appreciates the support of the public and is keen to continue to provide the service. They also ask that local people please don't dump on us.

PDG Peter Thomas admiring the finished job. What a difference!

                                    JUST A THOUGHT

Grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change.
The courage to change direction when I see them coming.
And the wisdom to not try to smack some sense into them when I can't avoid them.
AMEN.
