The Clubhouse Tanunda

   Thursday November 4th 2021

Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the month
The Rotary Foundation is not to build monuments of brick and stone. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds, if we imbue them with the full meaning of the spirit of Rotary as expressed in our Objects and with the just fear of God and love of our fellowmen, we are engraving on those tablets something that will brighten all eternity.
The Rotary Foundation, THE ROTARIAN April 1929
Words of Arch C. Klump World President 1916-17

Theme for the Month of November
Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

President Bill's Burbles

President Bill welcomed Members and Friends, and guests, especially our guest speakers Susan Raven and Jan Hoffman from Seeds of Hope.

All with birthdays in November were congratulated, as was Keith Millington, who will reach 23 years of Rotary service on 28th November.

What has happened since the last meeting?

What’s coming up?
The CFS visit scheduled for next week has been postponed until after the fire season.
As mentioned by Gavin, Donations in Kind working bee is on Saturday 27th November, 9.30am until 1.30pm, including a free BBQ lunch cooked by our District Governor Jeff Neale. Please register through the link in the email which was sent to you by David Hunter from RAWCS, or copy and paste this link into your browser https://dik2021.eventbrite.com.au or email comms.central@rawcs.org.au.
Our AGM will be held during the meeting on Thursday 2nd December. That also is the meeting at which Area Governor Craig Dowling will tell us about the Interact Club established with the help of the Loxton Rotary Club, so please make sure you attend.
Rotary District 9510 Conference will be held from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd April next year. Registrations are open now, an Early Bird Discount applies if you register prior to end of November 2021. Secretary Sandie will send out the link so you can register. It’s being held in our backyard, at Barossa Arts Centre, so no excuses for not going!
It’s our turn to host the Sir Condor Laucke Oration in 2022. There’ll be a small working party to help organise the event. Please help Secretary Sandie to make this a great event that everyone will remember.

 Other business.
President Bill shared an email from Darcy Schmaal, the recipient of the Nuriootpa High School Year 12 Award donated by our Club. Darcy wrote that “The award and donation will help me continue my future career and further studies in the agricultural industry”.
President Bill thanked Sue Graetz for her diligent investigations into an alternative meeting venue for our club. As most would know by now, we have limited tenure at the Clubhouse due to the conversion of the upstairs area to accommodation, expected to commence in 2022.
We know we can secure a meeting room at the Vine Inn, however at this stage, it is available only on the first and the third Tuesdays of the month. Obviously, this would mean a significant change for us. All members are invited to submit alternatives to the Board, using the following criteria, ie free room hire, quality meals service, storage space, audio-visual equipment, easy access, and welcoming environment. We have been “spoiled” by facilities at the Clubhouse, however we also need to understand that we have limited time to find an alternative, and we might have to lower our expectations! Please forward your suggestions and how you rate them against the criteria above, to Secretary Sandie as soon as possible (sandbsimons@bigpond.com).

President Bill then thanked everyone for coming along to the meeting tonight, special thanks to Susan Raven and Jan Hoffman, and other Friends and Guests.
He reminded everyone that our guest speaker at the next club meeting on 18th November, will be Oscar Seppelt, whom we supported to attend NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards).

SEEDS OF HOPE
Rotarian Peter Perkins introduced our guest speakers  Susan Raven and Jan Hoffman for this evenings meeting. Susan has a diploma in mental health and Alcohol and other drugs and the experience she has gained as a Mental Health Outreach Support Worker over the past 17 years led her to be of service to the newly formed Seeds of Hope Suicide Prevention network early in 2020. She is the current Chairperson and also works for Standby Support after Suicide. Jan is a retired high school teacher and counsellor. She has a diploma in Educational Counselling, which prepared her for the role of School Counsellor in various schools across South Australia, including Nuriootpa High where she worked from 1983 to 2006. Since then, Jan has pursued her love and passion for the aims of Seed of Hope.
Our Vision for the Barossa is a compassionate, connected and resilient community, free of Suicide.
Seeds of Hope was formed in 2020 after a series of community meetings and is one of around 40 suicide prevention networks in SA. They initially received a start-up grant, a table and marquee for events they attend. They survive on grants and donations. All their members are local volunteers living in the Barossa Community. Their aims are to connect to people throughout the Barossa council region, by having a presence at local events and holding conversations with the aim of breaking down the stigma of talking about suicide and mental health. Over the past 18 months or so, their marquee has been used at several public events including Mental Health Month and regional Agricultural shows. They have also held their own event at the Barossa Bush Gardens. Their focus is on suicide prevention rather than intervention.
They are currently arranging a ‘Come Create Connect’ event in the Barossa Bush Gardens on Sunday December 5th from 12noon- 4PM. Bookings are Essential either by txt 0409 284 983 or email: seedsofhopespn@gmail.com You can read more about them on their Facebook Page ‘Seeds of Hope Suicide Prevention Network’
You will have also noted the packet of sunflower seeds on the tables. WHY SUNFLOWERS? You may ask. Sunflowers represent life and hope. They stand tall and always face the sun even on the darkest days. Seeds of Hope Suicide prevention Network has chosen to incorporate the sunflower into its logo because they believe in positive mental health and in people’s ability to help each other face life’s challenges together.
In 2020 there were 3139 deaths in Australia by suicide. 234 of these were in South Australia. They believe that every single suicide is one too many. Men die by suicide 3 times more often than women and more of these are lost in rural and remote areas than the metropolitan and cities.
Communities can help in identifying people that may be in trouble. Some of the issues to look for are 1. Social withdrawal 2. Drastic changes in mood 3. Risk taking and self-harm 4. Escalating use of drugs or alcohol 5. Diet changes or rapid weight changes. 6. Changes in sleeping patterns.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
If you are worried about someone, tell then you are concerned and would like to help. Really listen to what they have to say. Establish empathy with the person involved. Ask then what type of support they think they might need. Help them arrange, or if needed, offer to help them access a service such as a GP. Do not leave them alone if they cannot keep themselves safe. Check back with them to see how they are getting along.
It is Spring get outside and plant the Sunflower Seeds.
Peter asked members for any questions and then thanked Susan and Jan for their presentation and handed each the usual Rotary gift.

Jan Hoffman and Susan Raven were the guest                                      speakers

             Rotary Info - Catherine Lawler

When I was travelling in Turkey in 2017 and 2018, some fellow travellers expressed surprise that Turkey was a busy, bustling, thriving and modern country, contrary to misconceptions that it was a backward, developing country, where they expected to see only quaint rural villages, populated by farmers and donkeys.  And so, I wondered about the presence of Rotary in this place.
Rotary International interest began in Turkey around 1950 - 1952 but a bid by Rotary International journalist Falih Rifki Atay, writer and journalist Ahmet Emin Yalman, a history professor Ahmet Sukru Esmer, Ankara University Faculty of Law lecturer Professor Münci bid to charter a club was unsuccessful. The Interior Ministry in Ankara denied a petition to establish a Rotary club on the basis that “Rotary is an organization of only male members of specific "violation of the Constitution, the equality of men and women"
Nevertheless, interest in establishing a club continued and the first Rotary Club in this country was founded in 1954 in Ankara.
Ankara Rotary club was establıshed on 24 March 1954 With the second initiative initiated by Oğuzhan Koraltan in 1952. Nail Avunduk and Assoc. Dr. Mukbil Özyörük became founding members.
The first club president is Şahap Birgi.
Ankara Rotary Club which took Charter on 23rd March 1955 is the first Rotary club in Turkey
İstanbul Rotary Club was established on February 8, 1956 under the presidency of Oğuzhan R. Koraltan. Rıfat Bereket, İsmail Hakk Kutbay, Kazım Taşkent, Eli Rosenthal, Hilmi Naili Barlo and John A. Caouki are founding members of this club.
The third Rotary Club of Turkey is  İzmir Rotary Club. This club was founded by the initiatives of Nejat Eczacıbaşı and John Caouki from Istanbul Rotary Club.
Izmir Rotary Club held its first meeting on January 9, 1961, with its founders who are Sadi Aral, Cemil Atalay, Muvahhit Atamer and Süreya Birsel.
The fourth Rotary is the Bursa Rotary Club founded on 12 June 1963 with the initiatives of Zübeyir Şeyhun and initiative of the Istanbul Rotary Club.
Within the first ten years, the number of Rotary clubs did not exceed four.
Çankaya Rotary Club was added in 1965 and Samsun Rotary Club was added in 1966.
Today in Turkey, there are over 7500 Rotarians in 3 regions numbered 2420, 2430, 2440

Bev Stephenson advised that she recently attended the Valedictory Service at Faith College.  Bethany Hayes was the recipient of our Rotary Club’s award. Bethany hopes to study Midwifery and realises that an ATAR of 95 is necessary for this to occur. She also received a special service award and two other academic awards.  Bethany is the granddaughter of Joylene and Malcolm Seppelt.

                                Editors Note
Two of our members' businesses figured prominently in the Leader Newspaper of the 3rd November 2021. A significant article for Lyndoch Motors established in 1951 celebrating 70 years of sales and service. Our honorary member Steve Ahrens general manager of Lyndoch Motors is proud of his 40 years association with Mitsubishi. As Steve says “we are all about people.”
Bethany wines also figured significantly in the Leader celebrating their 40th Anniversary. Our Rotary member Geoff Schrapel is a 5th generation Vigneron and proprietor. With some of the oldest vines in the Barossa, Bethany Wines have found ways to evolve with modern technologies whilst still utilising traditional methods in their winemaking.
Congratulations to both businesses having successfully served the Barossa Valley and beyond for all of their respective years.
As this editor says.. I like to drink a Bethany wine and I enjoy driving my Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross  from Lyndoch Motors, but not at the same time.

  DIWALI FESTIVAL-Thursday Nov 4th 2021
PDG Peter Thomas spent 10 seconds providing a brief of Diwali.
It is an important religious festival originating in India. Diwali takes place annually and lasts for five days, marking the start of the Hindu New Year. It is also celebrated by Sikhs and Jains. The exact dates change each year and are determined by the position of the moon, but it usually falls between October and November.  Diwali means 'row of lights' and it is celebrated by thousands of people throughout the world.  If you wish to know more contact Mr. Google like I did...Editor.

Birthing Kits Assembly project
The assembly of Birthing kits held over Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October was a great success, with 35 people attending across the two days. The Tanunda CWA Community Hall was the perfect venue.
What actually goes into a birthing kit was a bit of a mystery for some, until actually Sandy Nicholson from Zonta explained the items and their intended use:

A decomposable plastic sheet 1 metre square to create a safer birthplace for baby and mother; surgical gloves for the person who is assisting with the birth; soap for washing hands and the mother; three pieces of string, two for tying the umbilical cord and a spare in case one is dropped; a blade for cutting the umbilical cord; three pieces of gauze for wiping the baby’s eyes and mouth; and a plastic pouch to contain all the items.

First task in the process is to fold the plastic sheets neatly and correctly (no air!), so they will fit into the pouch. According to the two Peters, this was more difficult than folding fitted bedsheets!

The gauze had to be separated into fives and the string into threes. It was important to keep the quantities correct so we achieved 200 complete kits in each assembly line. Counting out the gauze needed a lot of concentration, didn’t it Phil?!
As well as lots of laughs and camaraderie, we found out the answer to one of life’s most important questions, “How long is a piece of string?”.
In this instance, it’s 24 centimetres!

We had 12 people from our Rotary Club (2 on both days), 13 from the Barossa & Districts Combined Probus Club, 4 from the Great Revival Shop and 3 from Zonta Gawler (on both days), so it was a very social collaboration with other community clubs. In just a few hours, we packed 400 kits into boxes for transport

Thanks to:
  • the Zonta team who guided and supported us;
  • the volunteers who helped in the assembly;
  • Rotary District 9510 for the financial support to purchase the kit components;
  • The Barossa Council for use of the Hall.
