President notes: Keith for Peter
(Words of Wisdom).
1 We need a Birthday Caller.
Mary Martin has been doing it for a while and wants to retire.
Duties are: Call Members, Partners and Friends on their birthday and wish them a Happy Birthday from the Club. Birthdays, Names and phone numbers are easily available; we just need someone to make the call and bring a little happiness to the world.
2 Promotions person for the Airshow.
We have a basic plan that worked for the 2021 Airshow. We need someone to manage it for us, and use their promotional flair to improve, expand and develop the plan. Any willing volunteer will be considered, so it does not have to be a Rotarian or Friend. As the entire management team are all unpaid volunteers, the Promotions person’s reward will be the same as the rest of the team, free entry into the Airshow, satisfaction for a job well done, the gratitude of the rest of the club members and seeing the final dollar count that will go to support our community.
3 Talking about the Airshow, we need a major beneficiary. If you have a suggestion, please pass it on to Secretary Sandie or any of the Airshow Committee.
4 Peter's Survey.
Not easy to talk about as it is member confidential. If you need more information before responding, I could produce an email to each Member and Friend giving a bit more detail than was in the Bulletin. Some of the options have several layers of choice so a simple yes/no is not completely applicable.
5 Social Activities.
- How about a Sunday afternoon at the Barossa Minigolf? Pizza for lunch then a swift 18 holes on the Dinosaur Golf Course. Play in teams so the winning team can win a Cherry Ripe and possibly a Silver(ish) Cup. Numbers Interested?
- The Riverland caravan parks are coping with a bashing from flood waters down the Murray and it could get worse before it gets better. When the parks are back in business, how about we have a weekend in a caravan park? If you have your own van use that, if you do not have a van, book a cabin.
Itinerary is:
Travel Friday PM and have a BYO BBQ at the park for dinner.
Saturday: Possible River Cruise if available. Maybe a tour of a couple of wineries or a game of golf. Back to the CP for dinner, possibly get one of the Riverland clubs to join us,
Possible to get a caterer to provide dinner at the CP or maybe a local pub will take us in
Sunday Pack up and go home. Numbers interested?
- Tour Down Under 2023 will pass the Bethany Winery 5 times. How about we pressure Geoff Schrapel to let us use his winery front lawn again, only this time we pay for the Portaloo? Numbers Interested?

Guest Speaker - Duane Boerth
Duane was introduced by our member James who is one of his many friends. A few years ago, Duane purchased the old Bank of Adelaide building in Truro and has developed it into his own 2nd hand dealership known as SA Auctioneers and Appraisers. He deals with clients selling properties, downsizing or recently married. His business operates at 21 Sturt Hwy, Truro. Over the years he has built much of his business around the history of The Bank of Adelaide, which was founded in 1865 and became a strong banking operation, with many branches in country towns serving the people of South Australia until 1979/80 when it was then taken over by the ANZ Bank. Duane brought along some interesting items from the old bank. He also bottles GSM wine exclusively for The Bank of Adelaide Retired Officers Wine Club. using an old bank cheque as the label. Those present were given a sip and found it to be quite pleasant. He is happy to sell it to Rotary members for $10 a bottle. I brought a part bottle home and have noted that this private bottling was in memory of bank officer Bruce Mclean who I knew and who died on 18th March this year. Duane has some concerns regarding the proposed Truro by-pass and as he said it will have a major effect on several of the main street businesses including his own.
It may mean shifting away from Truro and he indicated that the old Port Adelaide branch of the Bank was in his sights. His talk was very interesting particularly for the bulletin editor, who joined the Bank of Adelaide in1956 as a junior clerk. The Bank of Adelaide was his career for 25 years followed by a further 16 years in the ANZ bank until his retirement. Following a few questions James thanked Duane for his interesting talk and handed him the usual gift.

Rotary Foundation Dinner November 7th 2022. held at the Old Spot Hotel.
Editor's note: Peggy and I attended the Foundation Dinner on Monday evening, hosted by the Salisbury Club. More than sixty people were present including District Governor Paul Thomas and his wife Kathryn, along with DGE Craig Dowling and DGN Marie-Louise Lees. PDGs John Downing, Alun Hughes and Doug Layng also attended. MC Rick Henke from the Salisbury Club, their Foundation Director as well as an Area Governor carried the night of activities brilliantly.
There were two major speakers. Firstly, Mr d’Arcy Lunn, founder and director of Teaspoons of Change, as well as several other achievements including being a Rotary Peace Fellow and working closely with Rotary on polio eradication. His presentation was on-line and covered many roles as an educator. His passions have taken him to more than 90 countries in the past 22 years. In 2014 d’Arcy founded Teaspoons of Change – an organisation focusing on decisions and actions that have an impact on people and the planet to create positive change.
The second speaker was to be Dr Afzal Mahood, but, unfortunately, he had to return to Pakistan following the death of his father. However, Dr Joseph Masika OAM – who is the publicity officer for the Foundation Committee in D9510 was able to recommend Dr Shagufta Perveen as speaker No.2. Dr Perveen has worked with the Advisory Committee of WHO specialising in Tropical Disease Research for the past four years. She has now received notice that her examiners have conferred and accepted her for a one-year appointment to work on the eradication of polio in Pakistan.

Colin Willington Salisbury President Elect hands a thank you gift to
Doctor Shagufta Perveen.
The cost to attend was $35 per person and included a three-course meal, of which $6 went to The Rotary Foundation.
Along with a range of excellent prizes for the raffle at $2 per ticket and the auction of a half dozen bottles of quality wine, more than $1000 was raised for The Rotary Foundation.
Peggy was successful in winning a raffle prize and she brought home two jars of edible snakes.

The Wedding of the year
Lisa and Nick.
We gathered at the home of David and Anne Braunack for the ceremony. The weather on offer was somewhat threatening. Never-the-less we found cover as the rain started to fall and the heavens opened up. Following the exchange of vows and the usual 'you may kiss the bride' we all headed towards a large marquee, dodging the heavy drops of rain as best we could. Once we settled into the marquee at our selected tables a pleasant variety of eats was served together with drinks of your choice. The rain kept on falling, it was a wet night, but the happiness surrounding the newlyweds and the speeches including those from the bride to the groom and vice versa were nothing short of 'wow'. Most of us finished up quite damp, but nothing was going to upset this wonderful occasion.
The smiles from Nick and Lisa, even allowing for the wedding frock that had picked up a bit of colour along the way, is a fair indication that this wedding was all happiness and made in heaven.
