Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the month

World Understanding and Peace
If we are to succeed in our efforts toward world cooperation, we must learn to think of the world not as an aggregation of Sovereign States, but as a world community of divinely created beings with hopes and ambitions and fears like our own. The key that will unlock the door to a peaceful tomorrow, from the scourge of war, is the discovery that nations are people.

President Richard C. Hedke, 1946-47
Detroit, Michigan U.S.A.

President Bill's Burble
President Bill opened meeting number 3271 and welcomed Rotarians and Friends and Guests.
Birthdays and Years of Rotary Service were as mentioned at the last meeting and in the Bulletin. Also at the previous Airshow meeting, it was revealed that 17th March is the birthday of our Honorary Member Steve Ahrens so Steve was wished Happy Birthday from everyone, although he wasn’t present.
President Bill thanked those who have helped to sell End Polio raffle tickets and reminded everyone who hasn’t yet returned their raffle ticket butts and money to please return to Sandie tonight, or at next the meeting on Thursday 31st March. If you aren’t going to be at the meeting on the 31st, please contact Sandie on 0417 833 691 to arrange collection.
We’re still looking for guest speakers for our first and third meetings of each month, so if you have any suggestions please contact Keith Adams for a choice of dates for you to discuss with your nominated guest.
President Bill mentioned that bookings for the District Conference, closed on Tuesday 15th. It is a pity if you are not going, because there’s some great speakers lined up, including:
  • Dr Leanne Beagley, CEO of Mental Health Australia
  • Elaine Bensted, CEO of Zoos South Australia
  • Ian Henschke, Chief Advocate for National Seniors Australia
  • Human Rights Advocate Kay Danes, OAM and
  • Grant Stevens, SA Police Commissioner.
You’ll also miss out on seeing Keith Millington’s Soapbox performance about the Barossa Airshow, which Keith previewed to us at the last club meeting at Wanera, AND you’ll miss out on seeing the Showcase featuring our club’s ring pulls project, thanks to Bryce.
Secretary Sandie has ordered Emergency Medical Information Booklets which you can put your info into and stick on the fridge in case of emergency. These will be available to club members and the public for a gold coin donation.
Unfortunately our invitation to the Governor of SA to deliver the Sir Condor Laucke Oration was declined due to a prior commitment. Board is looking at alternatives and will keep you posted.
It was unfortunate that our first “test drive” at Tanunda Hotel didn’t go quite according to plan, due to a bit of a misunderstanding at their end, as to the meeting format we need.
President Bill asks that members keep an open mind when we next meet at the Tanunda Hotel on 31st March. Normally of course we wouldn’t have a meeting on the fifth Thursday, but we do want to finalise the voting on a venue for our club meetings asap.
At the beginning of the meeting on 31st March, we’ll give everyone a voting slip, and they’ll be collected at the end of the meeting for counting, together with those responses from people who can’t be there on the 31st. The results will be shared on Friday morning, 1st April.
President Bill called on Robert Brookes to deliver the Four Way Test, which he did with his usual flair!
In closing the meeting, President Bill thanked everyone for attending the meeting, with special thanks to CJ for sharing his time with us.

The club's first meeting at the Tanunda Hotel.

C.J. Setlhong – generally referred to as C.J. was our guest speaker at the first meeting in the Tanunda Hotel.   C.J. was born and lived in Botswana a landlocked country of southern Africa. He covered quite a lot of his early education in his home country, being primary and then secondary. He then followed on by going to a university where 70% were Christian. He continued to rise in the education area and specialised in teaching of various sports and mathematics. He went on to become deputy principal and then principal for the next 15 years. Botswana has a population of a little over two million people. Whilst still in Botswana C.J. was very involved in the Botswana Institute of Sports.
When his family decided to move to Australia C.J. continued with his teaching abilities and worked at Westminster senior school, a University, Tenison Woods College, and finally Nuriootpa school. His education levels has opened many doors for him. Leaving behind his role in teaching, he decided to enter the real estate industry. He worked in various companies including Jim Building Inspections,  L.J. Hooker then Harcourts, prior to setting up his own Property Real Estate business with Century 21 where he now manages two businesses in Nuriootpa and Kapunda.
His very interesting talk culminated by telling us a few of the difficulties living in Botswana during his younger man days, particularly the complete lack of ‘No fresh water’ which we take for granted in Australia.
Settling into Australia he gained his Australian Citizenship in 2010 and moved to the Barossa Valley in 2012 where being recognised as a skilled migrant it only took two weeks to get a job.
Finally in rounding off his presentation he told us that in Botswana the most common food was Sorghum followed by other grain foods.
Chairman Bryce called for a few questions and then thanked C.J. for his talk presenting him with the usual gift.

      2021 Barossa Valley Foundation Scholarship
                        Hayley Tonkin

I am deeply appreciative to be one of the recipients of your university scholarship program. I applied for this scholarship hoping to relieve some financial pressure associated with travelling to university from a long distance among other university expenses. This has certainly done that for me, especially with the cost of travelling to and from the Barossa Valley to my home location.
My current aspirations lie within the science realm, more specifically chemistry. Although after taking some mathematics and programming courses, I hope to also incorporate those into my future studies to widen the impact of my education. I hope to one day work in a chemistry research setting and, in the meantime, use my current laboratory skills to participate in the Barossa vintages. Thank you all for your dedicated service to the community and for dedicating this money to Barossa university students including myself
.

                                               RYDA
John Semmler reminded members that the RYDA program will be coming up again this year. He stressed the importance of having eight people for each session, for the three days of this event, remembering we will no longer have the support of Kapunda Club. John acknowledged the quick response from those present at our meeting.

                  The Four Way Test

The ABCs of Rotary written by the late Clifford Dochterman  (RI President 1992-93) tells the correct and true story of The Four Way Test. It was created by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 when he was asked to take charge of the Chicago – based Club Aluminium Company, which was facing bankruptcy. Taylor looked for a way to save the struggling company mired in depression-caused financial difficulties. He drew up a 24-word code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives. The Four Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers and the survival of the company was credited to this simple philosophy. The Four Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages and published in thousands of ways.  Herb Taylor became President of Rotary International in 1954-55. During the lifetime of the author there was no serious attempt to have the Four Way Test abandoned, revised or even dropped from its prominent place in Rotary Literature, probably for fear of offending one who was held in high esteem, but now, it seems, the usefulness of the Test is being questioned by a growing number of Rotarians. Its use is questioned because it cannot be applied universally; it is criticised because it is ungrammatical; it is rejected by some as irrelevant and it is laughed at by others as fatuous.
Should we then re-think the Four Way Test?.  As editor of the club’s bulletin I say no to even thinking about throwing out the Four Way Test. Of course there are those who may see the Four Way Test as a weapon against Rotarians who may be proudly wearing their badge of office. So, no we shouldn't even consider throwing out a useful memory aid which can be used or adopted as part of our Vocational Service or any business dealings we might have for that matter.

President Bill has introduced the 4-Way Test to be read by a member at the close of a meeting. The most important thing to remember is those words ‘Of the things we think, say or do’ as it is clearly a declaration of self.
None of us are perfect. The “Four Way Test” plaque should sit somewhere (maybe in our home office or car or similar) so that it faces ourselves and not our clients or customers or visitors. I (editor)have a framed copy of the Four Way Test in his home office next to my Justice of the Peace authority, Occasionally clients have asked me ‘what does it mean’.  The Four Way Test should be applied by ourselves to our own actions and not to the actions of others. Simply put, be True, Fair, Friendly and Helpful in all our dealings.

Press Release
The Rotary Foundation has launched a worldwide appeal to support the Ukrainian people affected by the current fighting in their country.
From now until 30 April 2022, all donations to the Foundation’s Disaster Response Fund will be made available to the Rotary District in Ukraine and to designated Rotary Districts bordering Ukraine sheltering refugees from the war-torn country. From now until 30 June 2022 those Rotary Districts will be able to access this Fund to apply for disaster response grants to purchase items such as water, food, shelter, medicine and clothing.
The first Rotary club was established in Ukraine in 1929. During and after WW2, Rotary International made a decision to suspend Rotary activity in the Ukrainian Occupied Territories. The first post-war Rotary club was established in Kyiv in 1991 and Rotary has grown throughout the country since then. Rotary is also well-established in neighbouring countries particularly in Poland where many refugees have fled.
In 2021 local Rotary clubs established a Rotary Peace Square in Kyiv.
Rotary volunteers on the ground in Ukraine and these neighbouring countries will be able to use the funds raised to help the suffering Ukrainian people.
Those wanting to make a donation can google Rotary Foundation Australia and click on the Ukraine link on the homepage. Donations are tax deductible.
For more information, please telephone Maurie Stack 0427 668 821 or Mark Anderson 0408 622 698
