"Let the word 'Rotary' mean hope for the hungry,
the homeless, and the underprivileged,

Guest Speaker - Harriet Schuyler

After completing year 12 at Faith in 2008, I went on to study Geology and Mineral Geoscience at Adelaide University, stemming from a love of rocks and a keen interest in exploration in the mining industry. Upon graduating, it was the downturn of the mining boom, and as such were very few jobs in the exploration space. Instead, I took up a mining engineering graduate position with BHP at Olympic Dam and moved to Roxby Downs in 2012. My three years there was spent underground working in all aspects of the mine, in the backfill, scheduling and engineering departments, while also studying to complete my Master of Mining Engineering and Mine Management via correspondence to UNSW. I then moved to Dysart in central Queensland to begin a stint at Saraji, a surface coal mine. The key learnings during my time there were around negotiation, collaboration and compromise, as it was a very new experience working with a wholly unionised workforce. From here I realised I missed working in the underground space, and wanted to try the FIFO lifestyle, so I moved to Brisbane and flew in and out to the Cannington mine site in central Queensland where I was able to be involved in the underground mines rescue team, giving me my Cert IV in Underground Search and Rescue, and my Cert IV in Public Safety and Firefighting. I was then given an amazing opportunity to lead a team of approximately 40 tradespeople, engineers, planners and operators at Yandi iron ore mine in the Pilbara, WA. I would not have been able to achieve any of this without the support and opportunities granted to me by Rotary. Their ongoing support and encouragement of students and young adults in STEM is paramount to driving the pipeline of future STEM workers and advocates. Over the past 10 years, the number of roles requiring STEM qualifications, whether that is university or otherwise, has increased by about 14%, while the number of people completing and holding these qualifications has dropped significantly. It is programs like the NYSF which continue to encourage STEM involvement at a critical stage in a student's life, and open their eyes to the opportunities associated with further STEM education. Thanks again to Rotary and the ongoing support of everyone in the Club - I really cannot thank you enough for giving me my start along this amazing STEM career path!

Kind Regards,
Harriet Schuyler

Comments regarding Harriet's presentation came in from Sue Graetz who stated Harriet's presentation was absolutely amazing for a young person who has embraced so many opportunities made available to her from firstly attending the NYSF leading to a career in Science/Engineering

And some more this time from PDG Peter Thomas

What a great evening, our speaker Harriet was outstanding! Harriet was a child of this club, introduced to us as a tiny baby in 1991, attended social functions and Rotary Conferences,  attended the National Youth Science Forum in 2008; and now has wowed us with an amazing presentation of her work as a mining engineer.
The Rotary Conference in Swan Hill (1998) had many of “our” Rotary kids involved, Harriet included.

Guest Speaker No.2 - Sophie Brice

Our most recent RYPEN student is now in year 12 at Faith. She had  been selected to attend RYPEN in 2020, but unfortunately that was interrupted due to Covid 19. Sophie gave a very positive report of her experience. It is her ambition to study Veterinary Science in the future. In particular she has a real interest in exotic animals. As a balance to her Mathematics and Science subjects, Sophie is a talented music student   - Information provided by Bev Stephenson.

ANZAC DAY
Our Rotary Club members look forward each year to assisting the Tanunda RSL by cooking breakfast following their morning Anzac remembrance service.
On Sunday morning the 25th April 2021, 26 Rotarians and friends braved the early morning 6.00 am start with some arriving earlier to set up.
Approximately 190 meals were served, consisting of sausage patty, egg, bacon on a damper roll. Juice, tea and coffee were also available.  The club was asked to cater for around 300 meals. However numbers were somewhat down this year,  and hopefully the surplus food would have been used during the hours of fellowship. Our job was done and dusted by around 8.30 am.
 President Mark Graetz.

The above poem relates to training at Sandy Creek (Barossa Valley)
leading up to World War 1.

In Flanders Fields
by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae (1915)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
                In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
                In Flanders fields.

It is thought that doctor John McCrae (30 November 1872 - 28 January 1918) began the draft for his famous poem “In Flanders Fields” on the evening of the 2 May, 1915 in the second week of fighting during the Second Battle of Ypres.
John McCrae was serving as a Major and a military doctor and was second in command of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. The field guns of his brigade's batteries were in position on the west bank of the Ypres-Yser canal, about two kilometres north of Ypres. The brigade had arrived there in the early hours of 23 April 1915.

Save and collect those RING PULLS. A BVRC Project that has benefitted land mine victims.

A quick follow-up on the bulletin item about Rotarian Bryce and the ring-pulls!!
On the 28th April Bryce L and Peter T delivered 421 kg of ring-pulls to Simsmetal at Roseworthy. The
Ring-pulls arrived at Bryce’s from Northern Yorke Peninsula Club.
That is about 1.5 million pieces of aluminium !!  A heck of a lot of cans ! And a nice little addition to our funds.
