15 October 2020

Mr Keith Millington
President
Rotary Club of Barossa Valley
PO Box 759
NURIOOTPA SA 5355

Dear Mr Millington

I write to thank you and the members of the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley for financially supporting Kathleen Arbery, Ben Roennfeldt and Lucy Anderson with their tertiary studies.

Providing $1,500 each year through the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley Foundation University Scholarship Program highlights the Rotary Club's dedication and commitment to such a worthy cause.

I have no doubt that this scholarship is appreciated by the recipients who are now able to pursue their life goals and attain a tertiary qualification.

My best wishes for your future endeavours. If there is anything I, or my staff, can do to assist you at any time, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Yours sincerely
Tony Pasin
Federal Member for Barker

The Leader Newspaper Oct 21st 2020
Great Cover story on one of our scholarship recipients, Kathleen Arbery in The Leader. The story describes Kathleen's dream of becoming a psychologist to help youth and adolescents battling mental health issues just like she did. Having finished the first year of her degree Kathleen can't picture herself doing anything else. Her full story continues on p3 of The Leader.

  • Vehicle will be parked in front of the Visitors Information Centre in Tanunda; Council will put out cones to reserve two bays.
  • Jo Seabrook at the Visitors Information Centre has agreed that we can utilise the area between the footpath and the lawn to set up a stall.
  • We will use the stall to sell raffle tickets and to provide information about Rotary, about our Club, and about Rotary’s Polio eradication program.
  • We will need assistance to attend the stall and hand out information and sell raffle tickets.
  • Our contribution to the raffle is a prize of at least $1500 worth of gift vouchers from Barossa Valley businesses.
  • We need urgent assistance to source gift vouchers for the raffle please!
So far we have vouchers from Bethany Wines (thanks Geoff), Lanzerac Estate B&B (one night donated by Lanzerac, with a second night donated by Bill & Sandie), Barossa Valley Cheese Company, and Catherine Lawler's Barossa Art Space Gallery.
  • A list will be circulated at each Clubhouse meeting between now and then, for volunteers to roster for any two hours between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

Barossa Airshow - Sunday April 11th 2021

Steve Ahrens and President Keith at the                                        airfield
An article and the above picture have been forwarded to PDG Euan Miller District Bulletin Editor. Confirmation received advising that it will be included in the Dec. issue. Robert B.

                YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU!

We will need lots of volunteers to help with setting up and dismantling, and especially on the day, ie Friday 9th April, Saturday 10th April, Sunday 11th April (“the day”), and Monday 12th April.
Please make yourself available for at least half a day on at least one of these days.
We’d also welcome any of your family and friends who are able to help out.
At this point we just need numbers, and actual activities will be worked through and allocated at a later date.
A list will be circulated at each Clubhouse meeting between now and end of March 2021, but you don’t have to be at a meeting to commit your time.
Please contact one of the Board members now, to confirm your commitment.

                  Coronavirus - Covid 19

Peter Thomas writes, "I was amazed that a 17th year old girl could have such an insight into Covid 19. As at today (22nd Oct) there are 583 confirmed reported cases in PNG. 339 of these are in Port Moresby and adjacent area: but more importantly 202 are in the Western Province along the border. There have been 7 reported deaths associated with Covid 19. It is conceivable that there are many more unreported (no testing?) cases and deaths. Reported cases in West Papua (which borders Western Province)totals 4432. Medical facilities along the border are minimal. PNG has a possible massive problem."
As many of you would know PDG Peter and Bev spent several years living and working in PNG. Peter began working there from 1960 and Bev joined him in 1965, and both continued through to 1976,before heading South.
I am the Corona Virus or Covid-19
I seem to be making headlines this year
In your news, radios and papers
All that you ever see and hear

I emerged back in 2019
You all laughed, called me fake
But I’m the one laughing
With every life I take
From China to the US
To Italy and the UK
I’m taking the world by storm
Victims dropping like flies
While the rest of you mourn

You all cower in fear
Hiding in your homes
Covering your face
To avoid this plague
To see if I’ll unveil myself
Or if the coast is clear

You cough and gasp
You know you’re in my grasp
Sneezing and wheezing
That’s a bit too dramatic,
Maybe I’m only teasing

But don’t fret, dear
The teasing stops
Once I enter your trachea
Giving you a little tickle
Which you won’t like
But sure makes me giggle

Loud, continuous coughing fits
And loud, desperate gasps
It’s just lovely,
I love your despair
But it doesn’t stop there,
I know it’s not fair
I’m just a simple virus
You expect that I care?
Maybe some migraine
Some flu here and there
And what about exhaustion?
Hmm, yes, that’s a good scare

But what is this?
You’ve all come back out
My headlines,
Seemed to lie low
The one’s I had captured
Escaped and now free
Everyone out in the street
You all seem better
Going back to what you do
So you think you won this fight
But you’ll find I’ll be back
And stronger than you
But for now
Without a heavy heart
I bid you adieu.

Lift the Lid on Mental Illness - the following submitted by Catherine Lawler

"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.
There was a pause.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right."
A.A. Milne
Sending thoughts to everyone having a Difficult Day today. May you have your own Piglet to sit beside you.
