                       PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The coronavirus outbreak has caused lockdown for SA. Everyone has to stay home and can only go out for essentials such as food, groceries, medical etc.

Many of our members and friends are in the vulnerable category and we need to look out for those people. If you hear of anyone having difficulty due to the lockdown, try to help them. It may mean just notifying somebody or perhaps nipping down to the shops on their behalf to get essential supplies.
Being alone can be problematic for some people, so a phone call for a chat might be just enough to help somebody through the day.
The important thing is that everyone stays safe and follows the rules for hygiene and social distancing. While this lockdown is an imposition hopefully, it will control the spread and allow us to get back to something like normal by Christmas.
The immediate effect on us is to cancel our face to face meetings. The event for this weekend for Barossa Enterprises will not go ahead and there will be restrictions on activities in the immediate future. We have been approached to provide gatekeepers for the proposed cricket match at Tanunda oval but that is also hanging pending the restrictions.
Don Farley, Peter Perkins and Peter Canning have sealed the clothing bins as the sorting people will not be able to operate, the Op Shops have shut and we would be drawing a long bow to argue that emptying the bins is an essential service. The clothing bin roster will cease for the time being.
The lockdown is until Tuesday and the restrictions will be reviewed then with the possibility that SA Health will relax the rules to allow us a more normal life. Just think, if this outbreak had occurred on April 7th 2021 (4 days before the Airshow) we could have been facing lots of problems in having to cancel the Airshow at short notice.
Stay safe, follow the rules and we will all be back at Rotary very soon.

                       Polio Ute Relay
Rotary’s determination to rid the world of Polio began forty years ago. The passing of Rotary International’s polio icon Sir Clem Renouf on June 11th 2020 inspired a group of Australian, New Zealand and Oceania Rotary Leaders to launch the Sir Clem Renouf Polio Appeal in 2020-21. He was the president of RI in 1978-79 and his theme was 'Reach Out'. He had an idea that became a vision - to reach out to the children of the world and eradicate Polio. Hence, the Polio Ute relay was set up in District 9510 and began its journey on World Polio Day Saturday Oct. 24th 2020 in Alice Springs. It will pass through D9510’s twelve areas and its main purpose is to capture media and public attention. Last Friday evening the Ute arrived at President Keith’s home from Kapunda Club and was on display in Tanunda all day on Saturday November the 14th.
                                 Setting Up.

The Rotary 'E' club popped in for a chat

It was a rewarding day of activity with members of our club kept busy talking to locals about Polio, selling the remaining 20 tickets left in the Ute (on top of the 200 already sold by club members) and collecting donations from the public.

                           Polly in Iron Lung.
Nearing the end of the day a lady handed over $100, which brought donations up to $155. She said that she admired the work of Rotarians in their determination to eradicate this crippling disease, having been a Polio victim herself in the early 1960s and being left with a limp and the need to wear callipers.
Discussing Polio eradication with the public.
So overall our club’s effort amounted to a total of $595, which, after adding in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation $2 for $1 subsidy becomes $1,785.

Around 5.00 pm on Nov. 14th Rotarian Brian Barnett from Barossa District Club picked up the ute from President Keith to continue its journey.

Thank you all for your contribution in making the day a huge success and particularly to Bill and Sandie for your tireless effort in raising more than $1500 for the first prize in the raffle. Keep your tickets handy for the draw on December 19th at the Rotary Club of Burnside.
