When the community is crying out for leadership, the opportunities for Rotary service do not become fewer."

                           PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Don’t forget the visit to the Barossa Art Space, 35               Siegersdorf Road, Tanunda,
Sunday 23rd August 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
The Dog Park was mentioned in the Leader where we           may be funding some improvements.  This was                   discussed in March, but the COVID-19 restrictions               prevented further action in that direction.  When we           get back to normal and are able to do more                      fundraising we can re-visit this project.
There was a survey done by Rotary on Regenerating            Rotary.  The results are in and the conclusions have a          lot of new thoughts for how Rotary can evolve.  I                believe we will be discussing these results over the              next few months and looking at what we can do about        them.
I received an email from Lyn Jones.  We collected $126        at our last meeting for Australian Rotary Health, which        is Lyn’s Partner Project for the current year. Lyn has            deposited the $126 in the ARH bank in the name of the        Barossa Valley Rotary Club.
We need a Program Manager.  Now that we are having        dinner meetings less often, organising speakers will be        a lot less work than what it has been in the past.                Catherine Lawler has volunteered to look after the              Program.
We need COVID Marshalls and Rick Kessner and Peter          Thomas have both done the course and have their              certificates.

      Keith Millington
      President

                   Bougainville or Bust….
The RAWCS program was regularly promoted to our Club by Allen Klaebe and Bryce Lillecrapp who had themselves experienced many forays into PNG.
The proposal to get a team together to venture to Bougainville was however, put with more wariness as Rotary was to be the first NGO to enter there since the end of the 10 year “crisis”.  A team consisting of leader Bryce, and cohorts Grant Schuyler, John Heneker and Peter Sich departed Adelaide 15th June, 2001.
The project brief entailed the re-roofing in colourbond of a training facility that was two storeys high and 40m x 20m in size.
Location: Tsiroge Marist Bros Mission, Buka on the top end of Bougainville Island.
Exceeding all expectations, the team not only completed the original brief, they progressed to re-roof the refectory, train a group of seven young men living at the mission in the same carpentry and building skills, before working with them to re-roof one of the retired brother’s homes and the facilities kitchen quarters. In addition to the roofing jobs they built 12 wardrobe /desk units and installed nine of them.
An unexpected trip south to Arawa , the location of much of the “crisis”, was a revelation of the devastation of the conflict. Much of the town was destroyed by fire and looting and, after many years, was still without signs of repair. The Rotarians enjoyed lunch with Peace Corp troops at Kieta who commended them on the work Rotary was doing in the region. The team also visited a training centre at Marbiri; here young men who fought during the conflict were being rehabilitated into ”civilian life” with vocational skills. Home base at the mission in Tsiroge was like living with family. Great camaraderie, interesting food, lasting friendships.
An incredibly rewarding venture especially for Grant, John & Peter for whom it was a first experience of this kind and inspired them to begin planning for the next. The rewards from such trips are immeasurable as the experience not only heightens awareness of how people live in different communities, it also challenges one’s senses as to what awaits each coming day.
Submitted by Peter Sich:

L to R. John Heneker, Grant Schuyler,  Marist Brother Maj. Bryce Lillecrapp, Peter Sich, and President 2002/03 Craig Rogasch.
