Meeting 3317
Jan 8th Soiree at Hans Haan
Meeting 3318
Monday Jan 15th -Vine Inn

Gordon R. McInally
RI President 2023/24

Theme for the month of January 2024
Vocational Service
Quote of the Month
I am particularly encouraged by the current awakening of
business firms and the professions to their social responsibilities. Rotarians in responsible positions in business and industry have been leaders in helping train the unskilled, providing employment for the
so-called unemployables, creating opportunities for recent graduates
of training courses, developing markets for natural resources, and generally helping to lift the standard of living.  This is Rotary action in the finest sense.
Address to 1969 Rotary Convention, Honolulu Hawaii U.S.A. by
RI President George Kiyoshi Togasaki, 1968-69 Tokyo, Japan.

Our final meeting for 2023 was held at the Airfield on December 14th.

President Sandie asking all to purchase a bauble. Proceeds to New Dawn
Ukraine Project. More fundraising and raffle at the Soiree.
PDG Peter T. thanks those involved with clearing the bins in 2023 and reminds
all that they will be shut down from 17/12/23 and will reopen on 11/1/24.
And the cooks served up a great meal.
Steve giving us a full rundown on OshKosh, the biggest of Airshows.
At the Soiree
A happy group of 26 enjoyed the evening. The raffle was won by Bronwyn Lillecrapp about five times.
Karin Bosomworth picked up two of Bev Rice's lovely Art for $100. The proceeds of the raffle and auction   will be added to the takings from the Christmas event and forwarded to New Dawn - Rotary Ukraine Crisis Aid project. Thank you to all of the contributors.
David West reminded those present that he will need twenty members to assist with the Australia Day Breakfast. The Barossa Council has already paid the club for this event.
The open garden area on Hans Haan property.
Thank you, Hans, for the opportunity to relax and enjoy
our get together in these pleasant surrounds.

President Sandie's Spiel
We had a great turnout for our first Monday night meeting at the Vine Inn, Nuriootpa, with 21 Members, three Friends, two Partners and four Guests.
We have received a letter of resignation from Rotary from long term Rotarian David Adams. After reaching his milestone of 32 years, David has advised he is unable to attend meetings on Monday nights due to work commitments, so feels obliged to resign. He hopes to re-join in two years' time when he fully retires. In the meantime, David and Jo are welcome to join us at club meetings or events any time.
A huge thank you to Hans Haan, for very graciously allowing us to make use of his garden and facilities for our Soiree on 8th January, even though he wasn’t able to share with us! Thanks also to those who brought along items for the raffle and the auction, and congratulations to the lucky winners. The raffle raised $174 and the silent auction $100. With the dollars raised at the Christmas celebrations, we have $474 to put towards our next contribution to the RAWCS Ukraine New Dawn Project. This project provides transportable medical centres in areas of the Ukraine which have lost their medical facilities, and funds repairs to medical facility buildings which have been damaged so they can be used again.
Lola Miles
Lovely to chat with Lola Miles in Wohlers on Monday 15th, with daughter Chris. Lola told me she enjoys keeping up with club news through the bulletin and sends her regards to club members.
January is Rotary’s Vocational Service month.
So, what does that mean, Vocational Service? If you have read the District newsletter, there’s a very good explanation from DG Craig, who also suggests how we as Rotarians can put the ideals into action. I am very happy to say that I believe we – individually and collectively – achieve many of the action suggestions. DG Craig goes on to say, “If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. And if vocational service motivates and energizes you, then you’re in the right place, because vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations.
Fittingly our guest speaker at Meeting 3318 was Tom Darmody, a former Rotary Exchange student who now is a Winemaker, and who also puts into action the ideals of Rotary Vocational Service.
District Governor’s Talkback
Held every month from 7pm til 8pm on a Sunday night and open to all Rotary club members. Worth the effort to hear from other clubs on a great variety of topics. Last Sunday 14th January covered Regionalisation, Regional Community Groups, District and Foundation relationship and the RI President’s Theme.
COMING EVENTS
Rotary Centenary in South Australia lunch on Sunday 4th February, 100 years to the day from when the first Rotary Club in South Australia was officially chartered by Rotary International, which was the start of the Rotary movement in South Australia. Please try to get to this celebration, because let’s face it, none of us will be here to see the 200 years anniversary!
Women in Rotary committee are hosting the International Womens Day breakfast on Wednesday 6th March 2024, at the Arkaba Hotel.
Zonta Gawler are holding their annual Amelia Earhart luncheon this Saturday 20th January at the Adelaide Soaring Club, Gawler Airfield.
Amazing guest speakers at all these events, so well worth considering.
There’ll be quite a few of us working hard at the Australia Day Breakfast on Friday 26th January, so thanks to David West for organising, and to those who will be helping prepare, cook and serve hundreds of breakfasts.
We have a very important meeting on Monday 5th February – our guests will be President Brian Barnett and other members from the Barossa District club, to share in an open discussion about projects which both our clubs are working on. Please make sure you attend that meeting.
GUEST SPEAKER - Thomas DARMODY
PDG Peter Thomas introduced Thomas to last night's meeting. He is obviously
well known by Peter's family as one of the many Exchange Students who were given the opportunity through Rotary to travel to other parts of the world. His presentation included his involvement in the wine industry and visits to France, Denmark and Greece.

Thomas is a winemaker at Taylors Wines in the Clare Valley where he has been for 7 years. Recently he has been given further management duties running a department and is taking on more PR roles for Taylors.
Most of Thomas’s spare time is spent working in his local community. At the moment he is president of the K9 Connections Dog Club, Treasurer of the Manoora Town Committee and on the Fundraising Subcommittee for MinMan Sporting Club.
He is also working on establishing a vineyard on the family property in the Barossa Valley.
He recently went on a trip to France with Cooperages 1912 to visit their coopers in Burgundy (Tonnellerie Tremeaux) and Bordeaux (Tonnellerie Quintessence). After this study tour he returned to Denmark to visit his friends and family from his 2005 exchange, then to Greece to visit Thessaloniki and one of his favourite wine regions of Naoussa.

JUST A THOUGHT
When we lose someone, we love, we must learn, not to live without them,
but to live with the love they left behind.
