CLUB NIGHT COMMITTEE REPORTS
President Mark Graetz invited committee directors to report activity and achievement for the past six months. It was acknowledged that the Covid 19 virus had restricted much of our normal activity. The Air-Show committee in particular and members had spent much of their available time in preparing for what was a very successful event on Sunday April 11th 2021.   Profit from the Air-show will be distributed at our meeting on Thursday June 3rd.

CLOTHING BIN ROSTER
Peter Thomas is preparing the clothing bin roster for next Rotary year. If you are not available for a particular time period please let Peter know so that he can roster you accordingly.
Peter advised that the Community Helpers bin has been removed from the site next to our bin in Nuriootpa. This could result in an increase in the rubbish dumped in or near our bin. We hope not, and will place appropriate signage on our bin.

RCBV Foundation Inc – Scholarship recipients from the Barossa announced and approved.
John Semmler informed members that three new scholars had been accepted to study at the three Universities.  They are Isabel Nietschke Flinders University, Nikki Rawlings University
of South Australia and Hayley Tonkin University of Adelaide. John advised the gathering that our
members will hear from these students at one of our September 2021 meetings yet to be arranged.

Police Checks
Youth Director Prue Maitland informed members that it was time again to update the necessary police checks required by law for those dealing with young people. Prue told members present that they can completed these on-line.

Membership Report from Team Leader Sue Graetz
Membership Committee Lisa Akeroyd, Marie Rothe and Peter Perkins

Presently the Rotary Club of Barossa has a membership of:
Rotarians                             41
Honorary Members          5
Friends of Rotary              19

There is a copious amount of information that has been prepared to help Clubs build their membership.
Some of the strategies:
  • Evaluate the now
  • Look at changes
  • Don’t be afraid of the how
  • And communicate, communicate, communicate

This can be a very exciting process. One of the greatest reminders is that Membership is everyone’s business
Our Club needs to buzz with ideas, so please hit us with them!!

Our Membership committee meeting, on Wednesday 26 May, will set an agenda of manageable portions for discussion with all club members.

I believe our thinking will be new, a common feeling coming out of a very uncertain experience that we have all endured. Let’s not dwell on the negative thoughts of ‘what if’.
We must be prepared to move forward with a very confident approach and focus on making our Club appealing to all people we invite to attend a meeting or join us in community events.

Looking forward to a very productive and all inclusive move to make our club an example of THE ROTARY HEART NEVER STOPS BEATING.

International Committee
Our Global Grant application for the Uganda Dental Project is almost complete. The District Governor and District Foundation Chair have signed off.  Just two signatures from Uganda Rotarians and the documents can go off to The Rotary Foundation for consideration. The Grant is for US$70K; our contribution has been sent to the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust in Sydney, the Ugandan Club has their cash contribution ready, so we are set to go.
Have a read of the May ROTARY magazine, (the Club gets copies, ask Sec Sandie), where the new multimillion-dollar grants are discussed at length. Our Uganda Project could be an ideal project to be nominated for consideration. Let’s go for it!!!!!
Rotarian Gavin has done an amazing amount of work on this project. Congratulations and THANK YOU Gavin.
PS. The ROTARY Magazine was formerly known as 'THE ROTARIAN'

To all Club Members, Honorary Members and Friends of the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley
From Secretary Sandie.
We are excited to confirm that our Club's Changeover will be a Black Tie Dinner - time to dust off the smart suits and fancy frocks, polish those shoes and book with the beauty salon!
To maintain the sense of excitement and anticipation, all we're going to tell you at this stage is that the dinner will be held on Saturday 26th June.
Official invitations to follow, so put that date in your calendar and keep checking your emails!

Rotary Info - David West

David as he so often has done, gave an interesting talk off the cuff on ‘Make-Ups’. Some of our members would have immediately thought what the heck are they. Those of us with more than 10 years membership knew what they were. However, times have changed and attendance is no longer recorded and aiming for 100% attendance in any one year is a thing of the past.  Visiting another club whether locally or somewhere in the world when travelling or on vacation was one of those exciting times when we enjoyed touching base with members of another Rotary Club and its members. You always felt welcome at a ‘Make-Up’ and generally were given the opportunity to give a brief on where you were from and what your classification was.  I know that several of our ‘older’ members would have done a  ‘Make-Up’ many times over, simply to keep their 100% attendance in order. On a holiday to somewhere you would take a few club banners with you to exchange with another club you visited on your travels. On your return you would present the gift banner to your presiding President.  A few years ago when Brian Graetz returned from holidaying overseas, he often presented banners that he had exchanged and collected from somewhere in America or other countries. David invited a few of our members to give a brief on any experience they had from doing a ‘Make-Up’.  Editor: Sorry but I didn’t make note of those. However, to round off this interesting talk from David I’ll describe one of mine,
one of the many ‘Make Ups’ that I have done in my 37 years in Rotary.  I was in London in 1987 and decided to visit the Westminster East Club which met in the India Club in James Square. I presented myself at the Concierge's Desk and said I’d like to attend the Rotary meeting. He said you can’t because you are not wearing a suitable jacket. However, he said to me since you are from Australia (how did he guess that?), I’ll be going to lunch in a few minutes and you’re welcome to wear my jacket to the Rotary meeting (good bloke obviously). Soon after two Japanese guys walked up to the desk and said they’d like to attend the Rotary meeting. The Concierge said you can’t, because you are not wearing ties. However, this well prepared Concierge  was able to quickly pull out a box full of ties from under his desk. Problem solved. At this particular Rotary meeting there were 9 members and 14 visitors present. Just as well I make diary notes when on holidays. – Editor.
Thankyou David for your contribution to Rotary Info on ‘Make-ups’. We should still visit another club or clubs when we are away on business or holidaying. Doing so you'll gather more and more knowledge and experience on what this service organisation is all about.

Just a Thought

I just realised that I haven't done the Hokey Pokey in over 10 years. I guess when you get to my age, you just forget what it's all about.
