Maundy Thursday Breakfast
Kroemer's Crossing
Thursday April 1st 2021

Invocation:
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary Friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the Month

"Paul Harris's idea has succeeded beyond his fondest dreams because his search for friends took the form of service: Service to others above self. And Rotary grew to encircle the globe as Rotarians learned that joint service efforts to help others, served to enrich their personal friendships."

M.A.T. Caparas,  76th President of Rotary International (1986-87)
Address to 1986 Convention

MAUNDY THURSDAY
Our Maundy Thursday meeting and breakfast got off to good start at 7.00 AM with President Mark welcoming the 33 people present, followed up by his own invocation.

"Blessed are you, Lord, God of Creation. You feed the whole world with your goodness, your grace, your kindness and your mercy. As we gather here this morning to remember the ultimate sacrifice that your son made for us all, you nourish and sustain us and do good to all. Bless this food to our use and us to your Rotary Service"  AMEN.

Keith Adams reminded all those present of the busy week coming up and thanked all helpers in advance who will be working at the airfield finishing off the final preparations for the club's first Airshow on April 11th

Thank you to Peter Sich and all the helpers for the usual high quality delicious breakfast followed by the best Hot Cross Buns money can buy.

Guest speaker Brian Schwarz
introduced by PDG Peter who then presented his Easter message as follows.
" I am sure you are all aware that our way of life, has been influenced by Christianity. Public holidays at Christmas and Easter are obvious signs of that. However, you may not be aware of how extensive and profound that influence is. Our Schools, Universities, Hospitals, Legal system, Social Welfare system, care for the disabled, human rights - all these and more have been sparked and shaped by Christian faith and practice. Service clubs like Rotary have really developed from the spillage of Christianity. The ideal of humbly serving others has flowed into our culture from Jesus and especially from what he did on this day almost 2000 years ago.
We read in the Gospel of John that on the evening of this day Jesus got up from the last supper with his disciples, took a towel, wrapped it around him, knelt before his disciples and washed their dirty feet. In other words performed the lowly work of a slave. When he came to Peter to wash his feet, Peter said NO. No way are you going to wash my feet. Why? Because he thought it was demeaning for Jesus. It dishonored Jesus. To Peter it seemed contrary to Jesus' dignity as their rabbi, their revered teacher. But Jesus told him that if he was to be one of his followers and be in his kingdom he had to be washed. And Peter, in his usual over the top manner declared, "If that is the case Lord, wash not just my feet. Wash me all over" All this took place on the night before Jesus was crucified.
I want to make two points about its significance. First, the washing of the disciples' is an enacted parable.  It illustrates the need all of us have to be cleansed of self-centredness and the sin of turning away from God. Second, Jesus's action is an example. Jesus said, ' I have set you an example that you should do what I have done for you.' Jesus told his followers to humbly serve others. just as he has served them. No task is too lowly or menial.
This day is Maundy Thursday. It gets its name from the Latin word 'mandatum' which means command. Jesus's command is to follow his example and humbly serve others as he has served us. Let me close with the words of Jesus to his disciples at the end of the foot-washing. 'Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.' I am sure you know from experience that this is true, when we do it we are blessed."
Finally Brian finished his presentation by saying "May you be blessed through receiving the cleansing of Christ this Easter and blessed through continuing to follow his example of service."
Thank you Brian for your message.

THE RING PULL
A Ring Pull!.. that little can opener that appears on the top of your drink can, can be turned into money, so you are encouraged to keep on collecting them and passing them on to Bryce, Bill or Mark. The late Allen Klaebe started the collection scheme which was then taken over by his brother Barry.  Estimates suggest that over the years  more than $20,000  has been raised from this project.
IJF Joiners in Adelaide are a drop off collection point for Rotary Clubs, hotels, schools etc. and Broken Hill is also a round up area. A slightly retarded young man collects them all in Broken Hill and brings them down to Barry when the Tigers are playing the Crows in Adelaide.

Bryce, holding more than a handful.

All that glitters is not gold, however, if you have enough people and youngsters collecting, these little can openers will surely glitter for someone's benefit, when money is paid to the club following sale to Sims metals.  Believe me it doesn't take much effort...Editor

Airshow update.

With only days to go before the Airshow, the organising committee has been flat out getting all the final details sorted out. There will be working bees over the next few days while we get everything prepared, sites marked out, facilities confirmed, final locations identified and generally going over everything repeatedly to ensure we have not missed anything.
Ticket sales are still going strong with a big boost in the final days. Print, radio and tv ads are in hand with a boost to social media that has been a major source of information about the Airshow.
Briefings have been held to make sure all people involved with the Airshow understand what will happen on the day.
The long range weather forecast is favourable with a sunny day and a south-westerly breeze so it looks like it is all set for April 11th.
There has been a huge effort from all of the management committee members to get the Airshow off the ground, pun intended. It has been a steep learning curve to understand all the components of the Airshow and to get all those parts to come together. It has been a team effort by so many people.
The final reward will not be known until after April 11th when we can finalise the accounts and know exactly what the benefit will be to our club and our community.
