Meeting at The Club House
February 18th 2021

Invocation:
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary Friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the Month
"To strengthen our belief that only with an open mind, and open heart, open eyes, and open hands will we reach the highest quality of life, we need to be accompanied by like-minded friends in an atmosphere of good humour, serenity, and spontaneous practical day to day humanity.

That's what I found in Rotary

That's why I am a Rotarian"

Robert Bath, RI President
1993-1994

Meeting March 4th at the Club-House
Our next meeting is an opportunity to bring your partners along. We have invited Rotarian Marie-Louise Lees (Gawler Light Club) to speak to us on her Camino walk through Spain. Marie-Louise has been in Rotary for a very active eight years and is probably known to some of our members.

Rotary Information

Bryce Lillecrapp presented a brief on his 44 years in this Rotary Club. Prior to that he spent 4 years in the then Barossa Valley Rotaract Club. His early years in Rotaract were a stepping stone into Rotary. There were 35 members in the BVRC and included James Mitchell (now Barossa District Club), Jim Miller, Grant Schuyler, and Craig and Jan Rogasch. Bryce would still like us to consider the benefits of establishing a Rotaract/Interact club, as both can be a natural progression into Rotary. Bryce also mentioned that the Ring-Pulls committee of himself, Bill Simons and Mark Graetz is up and running and is asking everyone of us to get their families, neighbours, friends and businesses, to collect these and bring them in. Over the years this club has collected a huge number of ring-pulls and the proceeds have benefitted children who have suffered injuries from mine explosions.

100 years of Rotary in Australia

Some of you may have taken the opportunity on Australia Day to tune into the celebration hosted by Rotarian PDG Greg Ross. Details of this presentation were included with bulletin 3242. It was a live Zoom event and included several speakers including World President Holger Knaack, who joined Rotary in 1992 and just 28 years later became a world President. We were able to listen to congratulatory remarks from several dignitaries including Governor General David Hurley and Ian Riseley our most recent Australian Past World President. We also heard from Australian Jessie Harman who is currently serving on the board of Rotary International. Throughout the past 100 years Rotary in Australia has been bringing communities together through Service, Goodwill and Friendship. This special event also included some excellent entertainment from well known Australian Marina Prior who was born in New Guinea. Marina sang 'Music of the Night' from 'The Phantom' and a little later in the program the big voice of Mike Brady came on the screen describing himself as a 'knock about guy'. However, he also strummed his guitar and that big voice pumped out 'Up There Cazaly' much to the pleasure of his audience. Those of you who went to the Geelong Conference a few years ago will remember Mike Brady singing his signature songs for around 30 minutes. That was the late PDG John Pohl's Conference when 35 members/partners from our club attended. So from the four clubs established during 1921 in this part of the world, Rotary has come along way..... Editor

WOMEN IN ROTARY
Back to bulletin 3224 sent to you on August 20th 2020, I included an article on the lady below.  You are eyeing the delightful Rotarian Jennifer Jones soon to become the very first lady elected to the role of World President. Jennifer will assume this role in the 2022/2023 Rotary year.  The world Convention will be held in Melbourne in 2023 and Jennifer and her husband will host this event.  You may have read the article in the September 2020 RDU magazine which included a two page article entitled 'History in the Making - Meet our First Female RI President -Nominee'

The inspiring Jennifer Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Canada.

Jennifer has been described as a trailblazer for women in Rotary. In 1997 a friend who was general manager of a cable company invited her to a Rotary meeting. She described her visit by saying "I had covered Rotary as a young reporter when it was still a 'men's club'. So, I wasn't really sure what to expect" But she went along and "when I walked in, I felt I had arrived home!"
With a membership of 37 at that time, the club grew to 65 within her first year of joining, including 39 females. Jennifer went on to serve as club President in 2001. Her steps up the Rotary ladder in just 13 years are quite amazing.
Fast forward to 2020, a year that affected so much activity for clubs and the whole administration of Rotary worldwide. As we all know so much of Rotary's work continued via Zoom and webinars etc. During 2020, The Rotary Foundation in Australia held a special virtual meeting to acknowledge significant donations from a number of Rotarians across our country.  Jennifer was invited to speak at this meeting and Rotarians were invited to register so that they could see and hear from the first female to soon become RI President. Jennifer joins into the conversation about 15 minutes into the video. 'Women in Rotary' the best decision RI ever made even if it did cause a few hiccups along the way. Looking down the track perhaps 35 of us could think about attending the Melbourne RI Convention in 2023.

Click on the Link below, make yourself a nice coffee or sip on a glass of Red, then sit back and enjoy the enthusiasm of our soon to be first female World President.

Tanunda Show

Amendment to Gatekeeping schedule caused because Show Secretary has advised that Elizabeth Street Playground Gate is not being utilised for this year's show.

Once again COVID has raised its "ugly head", as there are several issues that need to be included to satisfy SA Health requirements.
  1. there is 1,000 people maximum crowd attendance (i.e. not including stall holders and show officials), each gate shall be provided with a "clicker"- you click in for people coming in and click out for people exiting. How they are going to work out attendance with two(2) gates is a bit of a mystery, not for us to be concerned.
  2. payment shall be either cash or EFTPOS @ Show Hall Gate, prior to show date Show Secretary shall confirm if EFTPOS is available @ Bilyara Gate
  3. COVID Marshals, Rotarians who are registered as COVID Marshals may be requested to perform duty at the gates.
I have tried to accommodate Rotarians' request for time and/or gate location, however in some isolated cases may not have been able to satisfy all requests.

Gate times have been altered from previous years Shows; i.e. amount of time has been reduced to 2.5 hours per shift, although last shift on both gates may be less/more. Bilyara Gate is only 1.5 hours (you are lucky), Elizabeth Street Showground Gate may have to be on duty until 4.00pm ( although it is highly unlikely that there shall be people coming through the gate after 3.30PM.
