Presidents Message

The current environment has caused us a lot of problems, forced changes in our daily lives and made us look for novel and innovative ways to get things done. On Thursday night, the Board had a meeting. Not face to face, the law says we must not gather in groups, so we met on the internet. A video conferencing program called Zoom was used to enable 7 of the Board members to meet and discuss tactics in dealing with managing the club under these difficult times.

Several issues were raised, the Changeover dinner, the loss of fellowship, the drop in cash flow, Rotary programmes that have been cancelled or postponed and the concern for vulnerable members to name a few. There is no easy answer for any of these issues and the Board will continue to look for ways to keep the club active and viable until this virus is beaten and things return to normal.

As a result of this practice Zoom meeting, we decided to hold a full Board meeting by Zoom on 30th April. If there are any items you would like to raise at this meeting, please email your Team leader.

A letter from DG Jane Owens gave the sad news of John Pohl’s passing. John was a Past District Governor who was well respected by the District and will be missed by all the people that knew him. His family will have a small private funeral and have requested people donate to the Rotary Foundation instead of sending flowers. Many of our members would have known John very well.

Hopefully, you are all managing well during this period of isolation. If you need to talk or need some help with coping with being alone, pick up the phone and dial a Rotary friend for a chat. We may be able to help you in getting formal assistance from the various departments, or maybe just getting essential supplies from the local shop.

Keep practising Social Distancing, Wash hands frequently, stay safe and we will all be able to meet at the Clubhouse on a Thursday night, sometime in the not too distant future.

Treasury Notes

The board held a meeting last night on Zoom. 7 members attended and the program was very easy to use, although it may not work quite as well if the whole club came online.

I mentioned as Treasurer, that having no meetings for the rest of this year, would leave us up to $4,000 short of revenue from Meetings, being Fines, wheel, bear, and meal payments.
Having said that, Prue said some youth activities would be cancelled, saving money and the Changeover will probably not happen in its usual form, so that will not need to be subsidised as it usually is.
Keith reported that Clothing bins will be locked, and I have posted that on Community Chat as well as our page.

Now some light humour to fill in space.

A little man was sitting quietly in a roadside café, having a sandwich and coffee, when three bikies came in.
The first one bumped the man’s chair violently as he went past.
The second bikie spat in his coffee as he went past.
The third one took a huge bite of the man’s sandwich as he went by.
The three of them went to a table, laughing and joking as they went.
The little man did not say a word, but quietly went to the counter, paid for his meal, and left the café.
When the waitress went to the bikes' table to take their order, one said as he pointed towards the door, “he wasn’t much of a man, was he”
The waitress replied, “No he wasn’t, and he isn’t much of a driver either. He just ran his truck over three motorbikes.”

Regards,

John Tunnicliff, Treasurer.

Clothing Bin Collection

After discussions with the Truro Op Shop and the Great Revival shop, Don Farley and his team decided to cease collections from the three collection bins located in Nuriootpa, Angaston and Tanunda. It was considered non-essential work and the risk to the collectors, sorters and sellers was too great to continue the operation.
The Bins have been locked and notices put on them advising people not to deposit items in the bins until further notice. This information has been posted on the Barossa Valley Chat Facebook page and our Rotary Club Facebook page.

Bulletin Contributions.

The Club meetings provided lots of Fellowship, allowing everybody to catch up with what everybody else had been doing. In an attempt to keep some of that fellowship going, I ask members to submit information, anecdotes, gossip or jokes so that we can use the Bulletin to keep in touch with each other.

For me, isolation has stopped my weekly dining out, but we did order Take Away from the Vine Inn menu on the back of the Leader, which was great. Lots of work on the block, gates re-located, landscaping done and general maintenance work has kept me busy. I phoned my sister in England, she was walking her dog at the time, halfway through the call another sister came walking her dog so that I talked to two sisters on one phone call.

Here's my joke
A lady who came from Madras
     Had a beautiful ass.
     Not rounded and pink
     as some people might think,
     It was grey
              with long ears
                         and ate grass.
