RI President 2023/24

Theme for the month of March 2024
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene
Quote of the Month
Blessed are those who give and blessed are those who receive.
Through this process, Rotarians and Rotary Clubs use the Foundation as a
support system for their activities. Every dollar committed means that   somewhere, someone will enjoy better health, or economic or educational
opportunities that otherwise would not exist. Every dollar committed means
that someone, somewhere will live a better life. They will be able to read
and write, or be able to draw clean water from a newly dug well, or
have their disabilities lessened so they can earn a living and become self-
sufficient. They can see their children immunized against life-
threatening or crippling diseases. As a Rotarian you must be at the same time a dreamer and a doer. When you look beyond yourself you set goals to be accomplished and then act to do them. This is the turning point of simply being a member of a club and being a Rotarian.
These are the words of Rajendra K Saboo RI President, India 1991-92.

We should never forget the benefits that this man brought to our world. Today living in a world of war that is sadly killing lives of children, their families, fighting to gain what their leaders want. As Paul Harris said, "Rotary can never die. Let us keep our hearts
strong, enthusiasm fresh, hope high."
RI President Gordon McInally
writes in the March RDU, "Think like a Rotary Peace Fellow.
Rotary is creating a generation of leaders ready and able to
build Peace worldwide. Around 1800 Peace fellows have graduated from Rotary Peace Centres and they are applying their craft in more than 140 countries. May the continuing work of Peace fellows and the Rotary members who support them inspire you all to 'Create Hope in the World' through service, fundraising and creative thinking."

Meeting 3321
Sandie & Bill have unfortunately caught COVID and will be out of
action for a while. All members wish them a speedy recovery.
Thanks to Past president Sue Graetz who opened the meeting and later closed the meeting reminding us all of the value of friends with the following comments,
"There is nothing better than a friend, unless it's a friend with chocolate. True friends are never apart, maybe in distance but never in heart." And finally, with
"We'll be friends till we're old and very forgetful, and then we can be new friends."
It is a busy time with Easter and other activities approaching.
In particular the D9510 Conference in Loxton will be a special event for those who chose to attend. A Fellowship night with Bowls and supper is on the 25th March at Angaston Bowls Centre. Rotarian Mark also reminded members that our club will be preparing breakfast for the members of the Tanunda RSL on Anzac Day morning and up to the usual twenty helpers will be required.
President Sandie's Spiel
There’s a saying that goes something like … “The best laid plans …” and certainly quite a few of our “best laid plans” have flown out the window recently!
Covid caught us out again, and Bill and I are in isolation for the week. However, we’re feeling better each day now, so fingers crossed we’ll be able to relax and enjoy a few days in Port Hughes before heading off to Loxton for the District Conference.
I’ve heard that the three NYSF attendees were impressive and I look forward to hearing from Josh Burrows at the meeting on 15th April.
Thanks to everyone who has called us with offers of help and with some important moral support. A big thank you too, to Peter Thomas for organising coverage of Bill’s turn on the clothing bins roster, and those who are filling in our shift at the Tanunda Show on Saturday.
Rotarians really are a special bunch of people!
Please make sure you keep up to date with coming events and activities by checking each edition of the Bulletin, and I look forward to seeing you at the meeting on Monday 18th, if not before.
(Sandies Spiel arrived on the 8th of March.) The bulletin editor had written some notes rather than change everything you can now read some of it twice rather than altering everything. Enjoy.

Looking into the Future …
Don’t miss out, put these activities and events into your diary NOW!

Prue introduced the three NYSF ladies to members.
Krystal, Felicity and Maddie.

We supported these three young ladies to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Each gave us a brief on their experiences at the Forum.

Krystal.
Attending the NYSF was such a magical experience! it
solidified my decision in the direction I want to go in life and improved my knowledge of other fields in STEM. I loved interacting with the NYSF participants, and I felt like I truly
belonged with this community. I am extremely grateful
to Rotary for sponsoring my attendance to the NYSF as I would have never been able to experience this amazing opportunity without your kind generosity!

Felicity.
NYSF was an absolutely amazing experience for me, I met and connected with so many people with similar interests, learnt so many new things, and travelled to places I never thought I would see. During the 8 days of NYSF, we had 5 STEM visits. During these visits, I learnt heaps from professionals in countless different fields with varying specialties. On Monday, I went to the Queensland food precinct where my constellation group took part in food trails and had a tour of their multi-million-dollar facilities; I also had the opportunity to go to the Queensland Museum to learn about the conservation of specimens and taxidermy. On Tuesday we had a careers day where we spoke to the sponsors of the program, then had a careers expo. Wednesday was by far my favourite day as I got to visit the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery where I met a group of lovely ladies working on a drug to fix spinal cord injuries. Thursday, we had our specialist lectures. I chose to learn about bio-inorganic chemistry which was very interesting. Later that night we had an NYSF disco which was so much fun; we got to dance out in the rain and there was even a mud fight. Friday was our last official day of NYSF and our final stem visit. For my final visit, I went to the University of Queensland chemistry building and performed titrations in a 2nd year university lab. We ended the night with a concert full of talent and funny acts which enhanced the entire experience greatly. I am forever grateful for the experience of attending NYSF; it has allowed me to solidify my future career path, meet so many wonderful people, and learn so much.

Maddie.
Here are some points of what I spoke about at the Rotary meeting.
- Student staff members (staffies) helped us through NYSF and led activities. I would like to be one someday.
- We had the opportunity to go on many different STEM visits, I went to the University Queensland (UQ) Astrophysics centre, the UQ Quantum Optics Lab, Department of Environmental Sciences Hydraulics Lab, BOEING, and Royal Queensland Hospital Nuclear Medicine.
- NYSF also hosted other events like speeches, lectures, a concert and a disco. These were all great opportunities to create lifelong connections with friends and people to whom I can reach out for any STEM related topic!
- Going on these visits has opened my eyes to many opportunities and I am eternally grateful to Rotary for sponsoring me to go to NYSF.

JUST A THOUGHT
Life is a story in volumes three-
The past, the present, the yet to be.
The first is finished and laid away,
The second we're reading day by day.
The third and last of volumes three
Is locked from sight - God keepeth the key.
