Invocation
Oh lord and giver of all good, we praise thee for our daily food.
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways help us to serve thee all our days.

Quote of the month

Rotary is not something written on paper. It is engraved upon the hearts of men and women. Rotary service enriches our lives. We are the leaders. People look up to us to take the initiative. We are the guardians of dignity, decency, restraint, humanity. In recent years we have seen massive changes in society. Old industries and traditional occupations no longer exist. In some areas, workplace changes have decimated entire local economies. Through Vocational Service, Rotarians can bring hope and stability and help with re-training, discussion groups and an awareness of community needs.

PRESIDENT BILL's Burbles
President Bill opened the meeting and welcomed Rotarians and Friends and Guests.
Those with birthdays and Rotary anniversaries were congratulated, with another two members clocking up a good number of years of service to Rotary, Hans Haan with 26 years and Robert Brookes for 38 years!
President Bill mentioned that the Rotary Foundation lunch planned for Sunday 15th May was on the verge of being cancelled due to low numbers. However, an email came out today confirming that it would go ahead. The Rotary Polio Ute raffle for which we are supplying the first prize will be drawn that afternoon.
Regarding the four-year Pilot project proposed by RI to regionalise Zone 8 which takes in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, it was intended that Sandie would email everyone with more information. However due to ongoing discussions at District level, President Bill advised we will wait for further advice from District before sharing details.
President Bill advised that members of our club have been invited to attend the Lions Club of Barossa Valley 54th annual hand over dinner, of President 2021-2022 Trevor Irrgang to President 2022-2023 Paul Sumsion, on Thursday 16th June. This is our usual club meeting night but if you wish to represent our club at that dinner, please see Sandie for a copy of the invitation.
President Bill gave some statistics around numbers attending the Sir Condor Laucke Oration, which our Club is hosting at the Vine Inn on Thursday 12th May:
  • Total booked so far = 49
  • Out of our total 38 club members, we have 18 attending including five partners, one friend, and one honorary member with seven apologies. All up this represents a total of 25 from our club.
  • We also have 24 attending from other clubs and guests.
Although the RSVP date on the invitation is today, Thursday 5th May, club members have until end of day tomorrow, Friday 6th, to book with Sandie.
President Bill then had the pleasure of advising that our club has two new members, Anne Schilling and James Dunn, both of whom you probably have met by now.
Unfortunately James had to go back to Victoria unexpectedly so will be inducted at the next club meeting.
After the meal, President Bill called on Bev Stephenson and Anne Schilling to come forward for Anne’s induction, and asked Bev to introduce Anne to the meeting before proceeding with the induction.
Rotarians then were asked to stand and join President Bill in welcoming Anne to the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley, and Anne was presented with her badge and Rotary information.
Following Anne’s presentation, President Bill advised the meeting that Brian Graetz has accepted the Board’s offer of Honorary Membership. This Honorary Membership is in recognition of Brian’s support and furtherance of Rotary ideals and the Rotary cause, and his valued participation in the activities of this Club since he joined in November 1980, nearly 41 years ago. Brian was presented with his Honorary Membership badge, and President Bill called on the meeting to show our appreciation for Brian’s contributions to Rotary and our club in particular.
Bill and Brian

President Bill then called on Ian Mader to deliver the Rotary Four Way Test, which Ian personalised with his story of applying (or not!) the Four Way Test in justifying (or not!) his escapades as a young(er) man!
In closing meeting number 3275President Bill thanked all for attending and reminded us that the next club meeting is in a fortnight’s time which is Thursday May 19th at the Tanunda Hotel.

Guest Speaker - Anne Schilling

Anne Schilling our newest club member was inducted on 5th May 2022 by President Bill. After the induction the large gathering gave Anne a standing ovation.

Following on from this Anne set about presenting a very interesting profile of her life. She began by simply saying, "I find this situation somewhat daunting as you all know each other well and I’m just starting to get to know you.  Anyway, here we go,” she said.
“Some of you have already heard of my life on the farm before I came to the Barossa.” ( I haven’t Anne, so I look forward to it. Editor)
Most of her career was built around education at the highest level and included…
  1. District Director in the SE, then the Adelaide Hills.
  2. Writing speeches for the Minister of Education.
  3. Principal in 6 schools over the last 16 years of her career.
  4. Roles included managing tricky situations, involving media and complaints to the Ministers office. Also being seconded to sort out big problems such as poor educational review, poor student attendance, staff turmoil.
  5. Some longer periods where she could help revive a school community
  6. Anne was fortunate to work for a semester at Beijing International School, an English speaking school, set up for workers building the infrastructure of the Olympic Games..
  7. Excursions as far as Kunming in the south, not too far from the infamous Wuhan, followed by a six hour walk along the Great Wall, seeing the Three Dam Gorge, and being in Shanghai on Mao’s birthday, where she was pick-pocketed.
  8. Involvement with Asian Countries included being asked by the Minister of Education to visit South Korea. It was four weeks of intense travel, eating very different food including Kumchee and slow roasted dog.
  9. Work as a school Principal had many ups and downs but was extremely rewarding. Anne left her career early to be full time on the farm but also at a time when she had achieved a lot and it was her time to hand over to another person with different ideas.
Those present witnessed a very interesting talk on an outstanding career of challenges and hard work which included a healthy smattering of good humour. Members and friends responded once again with a solid standing ovation.

President Bill thanked Anne with a hearty welcome to the ranks.

Doctor Divi and the Solomon Islands

Over many years the people of the Solomon Islands have seen many teams of Rotarians working in various parts of their homeland to improve their living conditions and facilities available to them. Our own club has had many teams travel to the islands to carry out specific work approved by RAWCS. (Rotary Australia World Community Service). Our own PDG Peter Thomas maintains a regular phone contact with Doctor Divi and his family who all live in Honiara. The photo below is a recent shot of his twins who are the eldest of four children, and have recently celebrated their 29th birthday (the girls were our guests in 2009).   Yvonne is a qualified Lawyer and Fiona did five years medical training in Port Moresby, and is now the Administration Manager for her Dad's two health clinics. The other two children, Divi Junior is around 22 years old and the youngest Gladys is 16 years. Sadly Covid hit the Solomons very hard and unfortunately as a result schooling has stopped altogether. It is distressing to think of students losing important years of schooling.
Covid is very active in the Solomons, hundreds of new cases every day, and far too many deaths. All Provinces are affected and the Health system is under great stress.
Doctor Divi also mentioned to Peter that in relation to the agreement signed between China and their Government many of the local residents are not happy with how it was handled, including the bad media coverage that occurred in Australia as a result.

Report from Vocational Director - Bryce
Bryce informed members that DG Jeff Neale had sent two letters of thanks to the club recently. He was particularly pleased with the work done at the District Conference by our team in the 'Show Case area' promoting 'Ring Pulls' and how monies raised has helped to transform lives. The hand-out brochure is already taking effect with the Mitcham Rotary Book shop worker Chris Dodsworth saying to clients "Are you still collecting Ring Pulls? You can leave them at our shop and mark them 'Chris'. They will then be delivered to the right place. This is a great Rotary Project as you will read in the brochure."
The second letter was a special thankyou to our member PP Keith Millington for his excellent five minute conference presentation on our first effort managing the Barossa Airshow.
