Quote of the Month
Treaties are written by diplomats, but lasting peace must be written in the hearts of men. We must educate ourselves as citizens of the world. Rotary is already a veteran in the fight against ignorance and all the other evils which lie at the very roots of current world problems. Our weapon has always been an informed and enlightened public opinion. We must use our weekly meeting as forums to the end that Rotarians may be the best informed members of the community. Friendship governs all that Rotary is and does.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT ON ROTARY MEETING, THURSDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER
After we as a Rotary Club have spent much time talking about our collective Rotary District 9510 selves for much of this Rotary year to date and I have certainly had enough of talking about REGIONALIASTION, it was a great pleasure as President to preside over a joyful, productive and positive Rotary meeting.

It is always a highlight to meet and hear from our University Scholarship recipients; this year we have awarded scholarships to Anika Marston from the University of SA and Luca Harper from Adelaide University, surprisingly both are in their first year of studying psychology.

Both of the scholarship recipients’ presentations to club members were outstanding, inspirational and breathtaking. The selection of both these outstanding students demonstrates the benefits and importance of providing financial assistance to Barossa sourced students to meet the demands of their tertiary studies. I look forward to following their progress at both university and in their respective careers.

Rotary as a community service institution occasionally has been subject to snide remarks that Rotary only looks after the so called “top end”. If this criticism is in reference to the University Scholarship Programme, I would happily say yes we are looking after the top end.  We should encourage high achievers as they are the next generation of community leaders in their specific fields. I believe that we as Rotarians can be very proud to support regional high achievers, who may need some financial support to assist their tertiary education.

The members were also introduced to Adam Robinson, selected as the Club’s RYLA candidate. Adam shall be attending the RYLA camp/programme within the next fortnight. We shall look forward to hearing from Adam after he attends RYLA when he makes a presentation at a Club meeting.  As Club President, this was the first occasion that I had the opportunity to interview, accompanied by New Generations Director Prue Maitland, Adam as a potential RYLA candidate and formally approve his application to attend RYLA. To comment that he is a suitable candidate is a gross understatement. Although just 23, Adam is a team leader at the Barossa Fresh Supermarket with a staff of 50 under his personal management and responsibility. Both myself and Prue were highly impressed with Adam and as I mentioned above with both the university scholarship candidates, the Club is supporting outstanding young people with obvious potential to be community leaders.

Final word on Regionalisation (well at least until next year), the Club members have overwhelmingly approved the three year pilot programme and I in my capacity as Club President, have formally voted YES on an online pole.

DARTS NIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELLED AT KAPUNDA BOWLING CLUB
THURSDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER 2022
The 22nd of September has been declared a Public Holliday to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth ll. It will be a day of mourning. It was considered inappropriate to hold the Darts night on such an important day so the Darts night will be rescheduled for later in the year.
Keep an eye out for a notice giving the new date.

University Students 2022/23

Rotary Club of Barossa Valley Foundation secretary John Semmler introduced our University students for the following year. They are Luca Harper and Anika Marston.

Anika is studying a Bachelor of Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) in the Honours class at the University of South Australia. Her intention is to reach a Doctorate in Neuropsychology which will take a total of eight years of study. Anika is hoping to do some of her studies at the University of Kent, UK, which is one of the few universities in the world that offer her subjects.

Luca is studying for a degree in Psychology combined with Marketing to further his ambitions in Business Management. He has taken electives in entrepreneurship, philosophy, criminology and social marketing to boost the value of his degree. Luca is currently managing a small start-up business in between his studies at the University of Adelaide.

The scholarships we provide have assisted 35 Barossa students since 2011 when the program began.
