Quote of the Month

"Reach Out" -  suggests two hands.. the hands of people who care, people who share, people who serve, people who reach out to other people.  They are action words. They suggest effort, they suggest commitment to demonstrate our faith and our ability to do something.
The words of Clem Renouf.. RI President 1978-79 describing his theme in an address to the 1978 Convention in Tokyo Japan

Profit Distribution from our first         effort at managing the Grounds of the
             BAROSSA AIRSHOW APRIL 11TH 2021
President Mark began by saying, “Yes we have heard this statement plenty of times in the last nine months. Just to recap , last year we were approached by Steve Ahrens of Lyndoch Motors to see if we would be interested in hosting the Barossa Air Show.  This was discussed with members and unanimously agreed to, that the club would take on the challenge. Our role was to arrange coordinate/facilitate or what ever you would like to call it, the groundside of the Air Show. Steve would manage the airside and mentor us through the groundside as he had been involved for at least the past 20 years with these events.
A management committee was formed and it was full forward throttle and back on the joystick from there as we got the show off the ground.
Many hours of meetings and behind the scenes activities were conducted over the ensuing weeks and months as all aspects of the event were coordinated.
At times we wondered if it was going to be a success,  particularly due to the Covid situation, which I think probably doubled the amount of time and effort that was required to run the event. However, we did push on with Steve saying all the time it will be worth it. And worth it, it sure was.
The promotion of the event listed two main beneficiaries namely Barossa Area Fundraising for Cancer (Baffc) and our club’s foundation to cover the on-going cost of University Scholarships. The club supports three local students, one at each University for the first two years of their studies. As the Air show was a success, we were able to look at other opportunities to distribute funds locally."
Julie Combe representing Baffc and Angela Pickett representing Foundation Barossa Youth Homelessness project were then asked to come forward and Chairman of our Air Show committee Keith Millington presented cheques to each of them. Both ladies responded with grateful thanks.

Julie and Angela received cheques from Chair Keith

President Mark said that an event of this magnitude could not be fully manned from our own members, so additional support was sought which covered 106 hours of work.
Appropriate amounts were then distributed to Mark Smeaton (Rotary Club of Gawler), Ian Todd (Rotary Club of Kapunda), Dick Milner (Rotary Club of Gawler Light),

                                 Ian Todd  and Dick Milner

Jan Hoffman (Seeds of Hope) and Trevor Waldhuter (Barossa Bush Gardens). A representative from the Rotaract Club of Salisbury was unable to attend so that cheque is in the mail.

Mark Smeaton (Gawler Rotary Club) ,                              Jan Hoffman and Trevor Waldhuter

Cheques were also handed to Rick Kessner (CFS) and Marie Rothe (Funday Sunday) thanking them for their support .

Rick and Marie with Chair Keith

The committee engaged groups and businesses to provide food and drink stalls to cover thirst and hunger and an estimated $15,000 was raised for their benefit.
Steve Ahrens then delivered a few words of thanks to       everyone involved. “See you all in April 2023,”  he said.

                                          BAFFC
Julie Combe contacted me (bulletin Editor) on Friday afternoon to say thank you and how thrilled she was to receive the club's donation to go towards the purchase of a vehicle in the future.  She said that Barossa Area Fundraisers for Cancer was formed in 2008 with a group of twelve locals. They set about establishing their organisation with a bank of $24 and a generous $500 from Patron Jack Ferrett.
Julie said, "From Little Things Big Things Grow. With hard work and the backing of a generous Barossa Community who are very caring people, our organisation has been able to pay-it-forward to those travelling with cancer. In addition to travelling for appointments BAFFC covers a whole range of benefits for those Barossans with cancer. If you need any further information on any of the services provided by our organisation please contact me anytime on 0400 405 084.

                Rotary Information – Helen Graetz
Over the years Helen & Brian have hosted many of the overseas students from various countries as their contribution to the Rotary Youth Exchange program. They have also visited some of them when they in turn had a holiday in one of the countries where the students lived.
Last evening at Rotary Helen read from an email letter received from Reetta Rautkivi responding to birthday wishes that they had sent to her.
Dear Helen & Brian
Thank you so much! This message really made my day. It was so good to read about your life and I’m glad to hear you’re safe and busy.
Just a couple of days ago I stopped to think of the three turning points in my life so far. I guess turning forty is a natural place to look back, even though I don’t feel like forty.
Seems like just a few years ago when I was there living in your beautiful home, being part of your loving family – thank you for treating me as if I was one of your own. I wouldn’t be who I am today,  if it wasn’t for that year 98-99 in Australia, the first turning point in my life. That year gave me so much confidence, independence and helped me get out of my shell.
The second turning point was the moment when my first marriage got suddenly cancelled. Even though it was a big shock at the time, it was probably one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Back then I failed to admit that the relationship wasn’t working, even though deep down I knew it. I’m grateful that my ex-fiance had the courage to question it and call off the wedding. He knew that I wasn’t giving my 100% to the relationship. What did I learn from all of this? Be yourself, don’t try to please anyone and follow your heart.
I still remember the trip driving from the airport with you and letting you know what had happened. I hope I didn’t ruin your vacation in Finland. I was so honoured that you made the effort of travelling to our wedding. And even though the trip turned out different than planned, I was happy that you were there for me during that difficult period.
The third turning point is meeting Masa in Argentina in 2007. I never would have guessed that the love of my life and future father to my children would step into my life there. And the rest is history. Ella is now 5 and Ilo is 7.
Our big dream is to travel to Australia for Christmas 2022 and spend about four weeks there. Even though it is along way ahead, I wanted to let you know about our plans. I can’t wait to see you again and show the kids what my second home country looks and feels like.
Sending you lots of love,
           Reetta

MEETING AT THE CLUB HOUSE THURSDAY JUNE 17TH 2021
Sandy Nicholson is the guest speaker on the subject of Birthing Kits. Whilst in Australia, the risks of giving birth are low, thanks to Australia's advanced and sophisticated medical system. In third world countries and disadvantaged communities the same privileges are not available to expectant mothers. Birthing kits provide expectant mothers with at least a hygienic environment to give birth.

I would suggest that we encourage Rotary male members to bring along their spouses to this meeting.

Roxane Canning shall be the Chairperson for the meeting.

Barossa Valley Little Athletics – Sunday July 4th at Bethany Reserve
Rotarian Ray Fiebiger asked if the club would support a BBQ cook up for the above function.
Plenty of hands went up and Ray will finalise numbers at the next meeting on June 17th.
Several L.A. clubs from all over Adelaide and near country take part so around 150 youngsters
will be there.  The parents of the kids will swell the numbers to maybe 300 or more.
The club has agreed to provide the BBQs and do the cooking. All food is supplied.  Starting time is
around 9.00am with egg and bacon for those who need it. The run starts at 10.30 am to finish by
1.30 pm. The usual sausage and onion cook up to follow.

To understand the world we must get close to people and their problems,
because the problems of the world are the problems of people.
