What has happened since the last meeting?

  • Again, nothing much!
  • We displayed the Rotary District 9510 Polio ute in Tanunda last Wednesday 26th January, thanks to those who helped out. Unfortunately sales of raffle tickets were totally underwhelming – the majority were purchased by our volunteers on the day - but at least we got a good spread in yesterday’s Leader. Raffle ticket books will be distributed at the Angaston Machinery Shed next week, the 10th.
  • The photoshoot with the BAFFC car featuring our club logo was postponed due to the vehicle being needed. We’ll hear from BAFFC when it’s re-scheduled.
  • We’ve received an email from Bethany Hayes, the recipient of the Faith Lutheran College Year 12 award, thanking our club and advising that the funds will help her to proceed with studies towards a Bachelor of Midwifery at UniSA.
  • Our club has been asked by District Governor Jeff Neale to consider donating to RAWCS project Tonga Volcano Eruption and Tsunami Disaster. Obviously our fund-raising opportunities are extremely limited due to Covid, so if you have an idea about how we could raise funds to donate to this very worthy project, please tell a Board member. Unfortunately, possibly due to aid delivery, Covid has taken hold in Tonga.
  • Robert delivered the good news that Pakistan has now been one full year free of endemic polio instances, so only Afghanistan remains.
  • Peter Thomas advised that Covid has taken a serious hold in the Solomons; there’s been four deaths and many new cases right across the provinces, probably brought in by boat. Thousands of people are congregating at vaccination stations which is only adding to the spread.

What’s coming up?
  • Next Thursday 10th February we’ll be visiting the Angaston Machinery Shed, please ensure you advise Marie by end of day tomorrow, Friday 4th, if you will be attending or you might miss out on your tucker! Details in the Bulletin. Thanks to Keith M for bringing the BBQ trailer.
  • Regarding future club meetings, the meeting agreed that many members are keen to resume face to face meetings for the social aspect. So it was decided that we will meet at Wanera Wine Bar in Angaston on 17th February and 3rd March, and 17th and 31st March will be at the Tanunda Hotel. Please advise Marie as usual.
  • As a contingency plan, knowing that any venue is subject to Covid events, Keith M suggested we could meet at Kroemers Crossing, byo food and drinks, chairs etc. Should this occur, members and friends will be advised accordingly via email.
  • Bill will enquire with District regarding the situation with the District Conference, and when a decision might be made about that event going ahead. We have a particular interest as we have agreed to prepare and serve lunch on Sunday.

President Bill thanked those who attended tonight’s meeting, and said he looks forward to catching up in person at the Angaston Machinery Shed next week, 10th February.
Everyone is reminded to advise Marie by end of day Friday 4th February whether you will be attending.

President Bill closed meeting number 3268, and a few stayed online for a social catch up.

Polio Raffle                                  On a warm Australia Day Holiday a few Rotarians spent their time promoting 'End Polio Now'. Unfortunately not many people were out and about and so there will be plenty of tickets available for members to buy and or sell. The prizes are excellent and the cause speaks for itself.

Framing Rotarians - Hard at work   promoting the eradication of Polio from the       world.

Rotary International President – Shekhar Mehta
"As one of the last two remaining wild polio-endemic countries, Pakistan has gone a full year without a report of a single child being paralysed by the wild poliovirus, showing us that a polio-free world is within our grasp. We recognise the commitment of Rotary members in Pakistan and worldwide who helped make this progress possible, while remaining focused on the hard work ahead to deliver a polio-free future to all children, everywhere.
Rotary members in Pakistan play a vital role in polio eradication by raising awareness and funds, advocating with government officials, and engaging community leaders. To date, Rotary has supported polio eradication activities in Pakistan with nearly US $347 million in grants to fund health workers, vaccines, immunisation campaigns, and surveillance efforts, and established health camps and water filtration plants to bring broader health services to communities.
While we reflect on our progress, we also recognise that this progress is fragile as surveillance efforts in Pakistan have continued to detect the wild virus in environmental samples and challenges to reaching all children with vaccines persist. Now is the time for Rotary members, government leaders, global partners, and workers at the frontline, to redouble efforts and ensure no Pakistani child is paralysed by polio ever again."

Editors note: In the recent RDU Dec/Jan magazine RIP Shekhar Mehta said under the heading, "Fighting disease is in our blood"  "Everyone deserves a long, healthy life. When you serve to Change Lives, your actions today can help extend the lives of others."
What can we do – as soon as possible buy polio raffle tickets and at least sell one book of ten tickets as soon as you are able. The prizes are exceptional and like you I like to be a winner.
.............................................................................................................

                        Tanunda Show cancelled again.

Tanunda Show is an event that has been held annually for ever (perhaps an exaggeration!), part of the fabric and culture of the Barossa Valley.

But the Tanunda Show has become another victim of the COVID pandemic, the 2022 Tanunda Show has been cancelled.

Therefore the Rotary Club has has lost another lucrative income source, as the Club has been paid for gate keeping duties.

Thank you to those members who had volunteered their time.

Messages from Secretary Sandie.  Please respond to each as quickly as you are able -                            Thank you.
To all Members, Honorary Members and Friends

We understand that everyone is keen to get in some social activity with your Rotary Club family, so we're pushing ahead with our Club's visit to the Angaston Machinery Shed on Thursday 10th February, 6.00pm for 6.30pm.
Bryce has advised that for only $20 per person we can visit the Shed and a good look around (lots of space) AND have a hearty meal - what a bargain!
If you wish to attend, all you need to do is:
1.   Tell Marie that you (and your guest/s if any) will be attending (marierothe47@gmail.com or 0411 524 156) BY Friday 4th February 2022.
2.    On the night, bring $20 pp cash or credit card, BYO cutlery, crockery, drinks and glasses. You don't even need to bring a chair!
Simple, yes?!
Please make sure you advise Marie by Friday 4th February, as we'll only be catering for the numbers that confirm attendance.
And if you have some coins lying around, please bring them - there could be an opportunity to put them to good use!

Looking forward to seeing you on the 10th,
Sandie Simons
Secretary

Also just a reminder that we are going ahead with our visit to the Angaston Machinery Shed next week, Thursday 10th February.
Please refer to my earlier email for details, and remember for catering you must let Marie know if you will be attending.

Our next club meeting is scheduled for Thursday 17th February, at Wanera Wine Bar in Angaston. Our guest speaker at that meeting will be Steve Ahrens, who will tell us about the Entrepreneurs Association and the Entrepreneurs breakfast which our club will be co-hosting on Thursday 10th March.
It would be helpful if we could get an idea of numbers to determine whether we do that meeting at Wanera, or via Zoom.
Could you please send me a text (0417 833 691) or email (sandbsimons@bigpond.com) with your preference, just one word will do, either Wanera or Zoom.

Best regards,
Sandie Simons
Secretary
