Club members met at the Nuriootpa Advanced Education Campus on Thursday 18th May 2023, a vocational committee event.
Personally, I found the presentation by Angie Kruger both fascinating and also an indication of the difficult economic times that we, as a community, are facing. It has been traditional for students attending tertiary education institutions like the three universities in Adelaide to relocate to live in Adelaide.
However, the state of the art technological facilities available at the Nuriootpa Campus make it feasible for students to dial online and “attend” a lecture as if the student was actually sitting in the lecture room.
However, I think the current economic conditions (lack of near available accommodation as well as high and increasing rents in Adelaide) may encourage tertiary education students to pursue the majority of their studies whilst living at home in the Barossa.
Will we see a growing trend of more people relocating to the Barossa’s generally lower property values i.e. cost of land and rent? The COVID pandemic has encouraged a practice of many people pursuing their employment from their home office.
The Board on Thursday night ratified the recommendation from The Airshow management committee for donations to community and charity organisations. Presentations will be made to the donee organisations at the Rotary meeting on the 29th June.
I shall send out details of the meeting on the 29th June. This will be my last meeting as Club President and it will be my honour to award two members of the Club with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition and as mentioned above announce the donees from the recent Barossa Airshow.

Guest Speaker - Angie Kruger
A smaller gathering of club members appreciated Angie's presentation covering the establishment of the Barossa Campus. What a wonderful development that has enabled young students to use it whenever they wish. It has all the facilities of larger universities in Adelaide and further South, providing students who live locally with all the necessities. These benefits reduce their commuting time and associated costs.
One of the several advantages is there is 'NO COST TO STUDY' at the Barossa Campus. It provides individual spaces, highspeed internet, live streaming webinars, online connectivity to the university. Getting to Campus is made easy with ample parking. Barossa Campus is strategically embedded within Beckwith Park, the largest, most flexible regional industry and business park in South Australia. The facility is supported by Regional Development Australia, Barossa Gawler Light, Adelaide Plains and the Australian Government through Regional Universities Centres initiative. There is no shortage of facilities. Adjacent to Campus is Provenance ready to provide food, coffee, craft beverages and places to socialise. Angie responded to a few questions making the point that everyone undertaking tertiary and higher education can take advantage of this purpose-built studying facility. Barossa Campus is the right place for any studies, and there is little doubt it will continue to grow.
Those present enjoyed an easy meal of pumpkin soup, a Subway selection plus a variety of their large biscuits,
all for $15.

NEXT ROTARY MEETING
Thursday JUNE 8th at Rehn Brewery Magnolia Street, Tanunda.
In January this year BRIAN SCHWARZ and PHIL DANIEL walked the MILFORD TRACK on New Zealand’s South Island. About the same time the North Island was being pounded by the first of two huge weather events which caused massive damage and loss of life.
A special Rotary meeting night on the 8th of June…. Brian and Phil will speak to us and show us some great photographs of their amazing trip.
Put the date in your diary! Invite your family and friends! David West has arranged special catering, (he is going to make his beaut sweets). We will need to know numbers for catering. Please let Marie know if you will be bringing guests as well as yourself. Don't miss out on this one.
REHN BREWERY… warm fire, interesting drinks at their bar, great food and the chance to hear about a journey not many of us will be able to undertake.
Any questions? Contact Peter Thomas.
